MBBALL | 2017 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship Preview

mbballnatsposter4The Holland College Hurricanes men’s basketball team is set to host the 2017 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship in Charlottetown, PEI this week.

Action gets underway on Thursday, March 16 at the Centre for Community Engagement with the Championship games being played on Saturday, March 18.

Here’s a brief look at the teams that will be participating, starting with the number one seed.

 

#1 Sheridan Bruins (Oakville, ON)

The Bruins enter as the OCAA Champions after defeating the George Brown Huskies 76-74 in the Championship game. The Bruins went undefeated in the regular season with a 16-0 record and finished first in the OCAA West division.

Team leaders:

Points per game (PPG): Ostap Choliy               20.6

Rebounds per game (RPG): Paul Williams       10.0

Assists per game (APG): Dylan Periana            4.4

 

#2 Nomades de Montmorency (Laval, QC)

The Nomades enter as the RSEQ Champions after defeating the Vanier Cheetahs 85-71 in the Championship game. The Nomades went 13-1 in the regular season and finished first in the conference

Team leaders:

PPG: Alix Lochard               18.9

RPG: Alix Lochard               11.1

APG: Kevin Civil                  4.1

 

#3 VIU Mariners (Nanaimo, BC)

The Mariners enter as the PACWEST Champions after defeating the Capilano Blues 94-77 in the Championship game. The Mariners were 16-2 in the regular season and finished first in the conference.

PPG: Usama Zaid                28.4

RPG: Usama Zaid                9.1

APG: Montell Lindgren 4.1

 

#4 Holland College Hurricanes (Charlottetown, PEI)

The Hurricanes enter as hosts and ACAA Champions after defeating the Mt. Allison Mounties 81-70 in the Championship game. The Hurricanes were 14-7 in the regular season and finished fourth in the conference.

Team leaders:

PPG: Trenity Burdine                    19.2

RPG: Chase Bowden                      8.5

APG: Michael-Ange Kayeye         3.4

 

#5 SAIT Trojans (Calgary, AB)

The Trojans enter as the ACAC Champions after defeating the Lethbridge Kodiaks 85-65 in the Championship game. The Trojans were 15-6 in regular season play and finished tied for second in the ACAC South Division.

PPG: John Smith                 20.8

RPG: Murphy Beya                      8.0

APG: John Smith                 4.2

 

#6 George Brown Huskies (Toronto, ON)

The Huskies enter as the OCAA Wild Card after a 76-74 loss to the Sheridan Bruins in the Championship game. The Huskies were 19-1 in the regular season and finished first in the OCAA East Division.

Team leaders:

PPG: Ajahmo Clarke          23.0

RPG: Ajahmo Clarke          7.5

APG: Teshayn Gayle          4.2

 

#7 Lethbridge Kodiaks (Lethbridge, AB)

The Kodiaks enter as the ACAC Wild Card after an 85-65 loss to the SAIT Trojans in the Championship game. The Kodiaks went 15-6 in regular season play and finished tied for second in the ACAC South Division.

PPG: Chris Maughan         15.4

RPG: Chris Maughan         7.9

APG: Cory Richardson      6.3

 

#8 Mt. Allison Mounties (Sackville, NB)

The Mounties will enter as the second ACAA team as they lost in the finals to the host Hurricanes 81-70. The Mounties went 17-4 in the regular season and finished second in the conference.

PPG: Thomas LeGallais     17.6

RPG: Alex Chisholm           6.7

APG: Thomas LeGallais     3.3
