Junior Hurricanes hockey team prepare for another season; hosting IJHL Draft this Friday
June 24, 2014
The Holland College Junior Hurricanes are busy preparing for the 2014-2015 Island Junior Hockey League season; this will be their fifth year of existence at the junior hockey level and third as members of the IJHL.
This Friday, June 27th the ‘Canes will host the IJHL Entry Draft at 7:30pm at the Tourism and Culinary Centre on 4 Sydney Street in Charlottetown. Pick-by-pick updates will be posted live at the Junior Hurricanes Twitter (@hcjrcaneshockey) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/hcjrcaneshockey) pages. The public is also welcome to attend to see the selections.
The Western Red Wings currently hold the first and second overall draft choices while the Hurricanes have two picks in the second round, two in the third round, as well as selections in the fifth, sixth and eighth rounds. The Hurricanes also have the option of protecting up to three players from the Pownal Midget AAA Red Devils before the draft begins.
The team expects up to nineteen returning players from last year’s roster to attend training camp and is eager to get the season started.
The Junior Hurricanes will also have a new home moving forward, the Pownal Sports Centre.
“Our team played two home games out of the Pownal Sports Centre last season, we had good crowds and the arena staff was very easy to work with, not to mention the facility is beautiful. It seems like this is a good fit for all involved so we’re very excited to be calling Pownal home”, shared Daniel Cudmore of the Holland College Athletics Department.
The Hurricanes will play their regular season home games on Thursday evenings starting at 8pm.
For anyone seeking season tickets they are available by calling (902) 894-6870 or emailing email@example.com. Tickets are priced at $75 which provides access to all exhibition, regular season and playoff home games.
The Hurricanes have also announced that Ronnie Hennessey and Jeff Ready have joined the team as assistant coaches; they join fourth year head coach Ryan Maxwell.
“Both Jeff and Ronnie coached me in Bantam AAA. They will really solidify our coaching staff and will only help our team improve and take the next step forward”, shared Maxwell.
Both coaches are excited at the opportunity to join the Hurricanes.
“I’m very excited to be joining a strong hockey program at Holland College and working with one of my former players (Ryan Maxwell). Being able to reunite with Jeff Ready as well is very exciting, we had the opportunity to work together at the Bantam AAA level for a decade in the 1990’s”, said Hennessey.
Jeff Ready shares the same feelings.
“After being away from the game for a while I’m looking forward to working with Ryan and Ronnie and hopefully bringing a championship banner to the program at Holland College. Ryan has done a great job and was one of the best players Ronnie and I coached in our previous 12 years of coaching at the AAA level.”
