Hurricanes men’s hockey drop two games on weekend

Friday – Hurricanes 5 @ Maniacs 6
On Friday evening the Hurricanes visited the Montague Maniacs at the Cavendish Wellness Centre for an IJHL regular season game; this was the second matchup this season between the two teams, the first game seeing the Hurricanes defeat the Maniacs 5-1 in the season opener.
The Maniacs got off to a quick start with a three goal first period after power play goals from Matt Higgins and Brandon Gaudet and an even strength goal from Damon MacDonald.
In the second period the Maniacs continued to pull ahead when Connor Myers scored thirty-three seconds in to go up 4-0. The Hurricanes Patrick Cummiskey scored on the power play at 5:10, his ninth of the year, to get the ‘Canes on the board, trailing 4-1 after the first.
In the final period the Hurricanes mounted a charge, Cummiskey adding a goal 1:21 in, followed by power play goals by Curtis Martell at 3:47 and Will Connolly at 8:12 to tie the game at 4-4.
The tie was short lived as Connor Myers scored less than two minutes later to put the Maniacs up 5-4, but the Hurricanes replied when captain Blake Ozon scored at 16:46 on the power play to tie the roller coaster of a game at 5-5.
The Hurricanes could not hang on to the comeback as Matt Myers scored with 47 seconds remaining to give the Maniacs the 6-5 victory. Montague outshot the Hurricanes 41-36. The Maniacs improved to 6-3-0 while the Hurricanes dropped to 3-3-2.
Sunday – Hurricanes 3 vs. Falcons 6 (en)
The Hurricanes looked to move back above .500 with a victory at home after to following to the Maniacs on Friday night and they got the start they were looking for, a goal from Andrew Skinner less than two minutes into the game to go ahead 1-0. They held onto this lead going into the first intermission.
In the second period the ‘Canes went up 2-0 when Eric Locke fired a shot from the point at 5:48, however the Falcons mounted a charge, scoring three straight times before the end of the second period to go up 3-2. Goal scorers were Josh Scott, Conner Dillon and Craig Dougan.
In the third period the Hurricanes tied the game when Will Connolly scored his second of the season with a blast from the point at 11:25 tying the game at 3-3, however a shorthanded goal at 15:38 sealed the deal for the Hurricanes when Brady Cook scored. Cook added another goal at 16:48 and an empty netter at 18:34 to give the Falcons the 6-3 victory.
Sherwood improved to 5-4-1 on the season and sits in third place with 11 points while the Hurricanes dropped to 3-4-2 and now sits in fourth place with eight points.
The next game for the ‘Canes is Saturday, November 16th when they host the Montague Maniacs at 8:15 pm at the Simmons Sport Centre.
