Hurricanes drop one-goal-game

The Holland Hurricanes fell to the Western Red Wings on Saturday night in Evangeline; it was the Hurricanes tenth straight loss, a losing streak that has seen the ‘Canes drop seven games by one-goal or two-goals which has included an empty netter. The Huricanes now sit at 3-12-2 on the season.
Saturday’s game started with an early Hurricanes lead after Jonny Richards found the back of the net at 3:26 of the first period; Nick MacDonald and Blake Ozon provided assists. The Red Wings would bounce back to take a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission after goals from Willie and Benji Gaudet at 13:57 and 14:33 respectively. The Red Wings outshot the ‘Canes 12-11 in the first period.
The second period would see the Hurricanes even up the game on the power play when Nick MacDonald found the back of the net at 4:25 with assists going to Dan Gallant and Blake Ozon; but the back-and-forth game would continue.
At 4:58 the Wings would regain their lead when Lucas Matthews scored with assists going to Curtis Martell and Fidan Feta.
‘Canes Jonny Richards would reply for his second of the game at 19:12 to tie the game once again, now at 3-3; Eric Locke and Blake Ozon would draw assists.
Before the period would end the Red Wings would find the back of the net once more with three seconds remaining to regain the lead. Jeremy Balderston was the goal scorer with assists coming from Riley Shea and Dylan Rayner.
The third period began with the Red Wings finding the back of the net quickly, in a game that looked like it was over early. First Logan Arsenault scored at 3:25, followed by a Willie Gaudet goal at 8:22. The Wings were not done. Willie Gaudet would add another at 9:42 on the power play putting the Western Red Wings up 7-3 with ten minutes remaining in the game.
Jonny Richards would complete the hat-trick at 12:19 on the power play for the Hurricanes to bring the score to 7-4; Nick MacDonald and Dan Gallant had the assists.
Fourty-two seconds later Patrick Cummiskey would score to make the game 7-5; assists were credited to Andrew Skinner and Eric Locke.
The Hurricanes were not done. At 15:58 Nick MacDonald would score his second of the game on a deflection from Dan Gallant to bring the game to 7-6; Will Connolly received the second assist.
With the goaltender pulled the Hurricanes pressured the Red Wings, pinning them inside their own end for the final two minutes of play. Patrick Cummiskey came the closest to tying the game when his shot from the slot hit the right post with thirty seconds remaining.
In the end the Red Wings would hang on for the 7-6 victory. The Hurricanes were outshot 42-40 in the game.
The ‘Canes will complete the 2013 portion of their season this weekend when they host the Western Red Wings at 8:15 pm at the Simmons Sport Centre and then travel to Kensington to take on the Vipers on Sunday evening at 7 pm.
