The second period would see the Hurricanes even up the game on the power play when Nick MacDonald found the back of the net at 4:25 with assists going to Dan Gallant and Blake Ozon; but the back-and-forth game would continue.

The Hurricanes were not done. At 15:58 Nick MacDonald would score his second of the game on a deflection from Dan Gallant to bring the game to 7-6; Will Connolly received the second assist.

With the goaltender pulled the Hurricanes pressured the Red Wings, pinning them inside their own end for the final two minutes of play. Patrick Cummiskey came the closest to tying the game when his shot from the slot hit the right post with thirty seconds remaining.

In the end the Red Wings would hang on for the 7-6 victory. The Hurricanes were outshot 42-40 in the game.
