GOLF | Hurricanes ready for season opening tournaments in Fredericton

September 20, 2017

The Holland Hurricanes will hit the road this weekend for two ACAA one-day events in Fredericton, NB.

On Saturday the STU Tommies host an 18-hole, stroke play tournament at the Mactaquac Golf Club before UNB hosts a single day event on Sunday at the Kingswood Golf Course. Competing teams are the Tommies, Varsity Reds and Hurricanes in male and female team and individual divisions.

The Hurricanes women’s entry is Daria Leidenius of Panoka, AB, a second year player currently studying in the Golf Club Management program. Leidenius has had a strong fall in preparation of the new ACAA season.

On the men’s side the Hurricanes have many new faces on their roster in a transition year after hosting the CCAA National Golf Championships in 2016.

The five-man roster of Alex Taylor (Nine Mile Creek, PEI), Jacob Ward (Burton, NB), Jason Poley (Stratford, PEI), Spencer Compton (Morell, PEI) and Guillaume Côté-Généreux (Drummondville, QC) will represent the Hurricanes in team competition at Saturday’s event at Mactaquac.

The ‘Canes will also be represented by four individuals hoping to play well and earn a shot on the team of five. Those individual players are Josh Gracie (Kingston, NS), Travis Gray (Sussex, NB), Brad Black (Amherst, NS) and Mackenzie Brennan (Brooklyn, PEI).

The ‘Canes have recently completed a six round qualifying tournament over some of PEI’s best golf courses where they narrowed the team down to the current lineup. The Hurricanes also competed in a two-day event last weekend at the Brudenell and Dundarave golf courses where Jake Ward (75-77) and Daria Leidenius (81-76) outlasted tough scoring conditions for the victories.

The Hurricanes will host the ACAA Golf Championships at the Links at Crowbush Cove on September 29-October 1; both the men and women from Holland College are the defending champions.

The PING CCAA National Golf Championships take place October 15-20 in Oshawa, ON hosted by the Durham College Lords.
