BAD | Hurricanes Hughes and Visser ready to compete at CCAA Nationals

March 8, 2017

Women’s badminton players Emma Hughes and Kristyn Visser will team up in doubles action and represent the Hurricanes and the ACAA at the CCAA National Badminton Championship March 9-11 at Seneca College in Toronto.

The ‘Canes first match will be against Darby Walker and Christina Woo representing the VIU Mariners and the PACWEST. Matches will begin at 11:00 AM AST on Thursday, March 9.  All teams in the women’s doubles competition will play three matches on Thursday and two matches on Friday.

“I’m super excited to be at Nationals,” shared Hughes. “I don’t know what to expect going into the competition but we’re hoping to be able to be strong competitors.”

Hughes was named the ACAA Player of the Year with a 43-5 overall record during regular season and conference playoffs; she competed in women’s singles, doubles and mixed doubles during the season.

Hughes and Visser went 24-0 together in doubles play over the course of the five regular season ACAA events and the conference championships.

“It is quite exciting to be representing Holland College again at Nationals,” said Visser. “There are some familiar teams from past years which I am looking forward to competing against.  We look to be strong competitors and are very excited for the week.”

Visser will be attending her second nationals of the season as she captained the ‘Canes women’s soccer team on their trip to the CCAA National Women’s Soccer Championship in November in Montreal.

Also representing the ACAA will be Sam White and Sam Lawther of the UKC Blue Devils in men’s and women’s singles, Hamza Munawar & Riley Shewan of the Mount Allison Mounties in men’s doubles and Olivia Adams & Jaryd Morrissey of the Mounties in mixed doubles.
