AOTW | Verney and Burdine named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Basketball players Jayla Verney and Trenity Burdie have been named Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 6.

Verney, a second year guard from Halifax, NS, in her first year with the team led the Hurricanes to their third straight ACAA Championship.

On Saturday, in a 79-57 semi-final win over the STU Tommies, Verney took home player of the game honours with 31 points, three rebounds and three steals.

On Sunday, in a 75-64 finals win over the MSVU Mystics, Verney recorded 26 points, one rebound, two assists and four steals.

Verney was named the ACAA Player of the Year, a CCAA All-Canadian and to the first ACAA All-Conference team on Friday at the awards banquet prior to the tournament.

Verney currently studies in the Sport & Leisure Management program.

The women’s basketball Hurricanes will travel to Edmonton, Alberta for the 2017 CCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship hosted by the NAIT Ooks, March 16-18.

Burdine, a fifth year forward from Reading, PA, USA, in his first year with the Hurricanes, led the ‘Canes to a fifth straight ACAA Championship last weekend.

On Friday, in a 96-63 quarter-final win over the Dalhousie AC Rams, Burdine took home player of the game honours with 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block.

On Saturday, in a 76-65 semi-final win over the MSVU Mystics, Burdine recorded 12 points, seven rebounds, one assist and two steals.

On Sunday, in an 81-70 finals win over the Mount Allison Mounties, Burdine recorded 15 points, three rebounds, one assist and two steals.

Burdine currently studies in the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry program.

The men’s basketball Hurricanes will host the 2017 CCAA Men’s Basketball National Championships in Charlottetown, March 16-18.
