AOTW | Hughes and Dawkins named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Women’s badminton player Emma Hughes and men’s volleyball player Kenton Dawkins have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 13.
Hughes, from Summerside, PEI teamed with Kristyn Visser at the 2017 CCAA Badminton Nationals and finished in fifth place in the women’s doubles competition.
Hughes and Visser went 0-5 in round robin play but would defeat the VIU Mariners in the fifth place game by set scores of 21-18, 25-27 and 21-16.
During the regular season and ACAA championships, Hughes had an overall record of 43-5 and was named the ACAA women’s badminton Player of the Year.
Hughes currently studies in the Culinary Arts program.
Dawkins, a second year middle from Nassau, Bahamas, played very well for the ‘Canes at the 2017 CCAA Men’s Volleyball National Championship.
On Thursday, in a 3-0 loss to the top seeded Titans de Limoilou, Dawkins recorded three kills, two aces, one dig and two blocks.
On Friday, in a 3-0 loss to the Medicine Hat Rattlers, Dawkins recorded eight kills, one dig and one block.
On Saturday, in a 3-2 loss to the Mohawk Mountaineers, Dawkins recorded 12 kills, one assist and one block.
Dawkins was named a CCAA All-Canadian at the awards banquet on the Wednesday before the competition began.
Dawkins currently studies in the Energy Systems Engineering Technology program.
