AOTW | Cooke and Veitch named Hurricanes Athletes of the Week

Women’s basketball player Cassie Cooke and men’s volleyball player Gordon Veitch have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending February 5.
Cooke, a fourth year guard from Westminster, Maryland, USA, in her first year with the Hurricanes, led the ‘Canes to a pair of big wins on the road against the MSVU Mystics and UKC Blue Devils.
On Saturday, in an 84-76 win over the Mystics, Cooke dished out 16 assists which is a Hurricanes women’s basketball record for most in a single game. Cooke also scored 26 points and added eight rebounds and five steals.
On Sunday, in a 66-58 win over the Blue Devils, Cooke once again came close to a triple-double with nine rebounds, seven assists and seven steals.
Cooke currently studies in the Sport & Leisure Management program.
The women’s basketball ‘Canes currently sit in first place in the ACAA with a record of 13-1.
The ‘Canes will be back in action on Saturday, February 11 when they host the UNBSJ Seawolves at 2 PM and then again on Sunday, February 12 as they host the UKC Blue Devils at 2 PM; both games are at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
Veitch, a second year power hitter from Cymbria, PEI recorded an astonishing 34 kills as the ‘Canes defeated the STU Tommies on the weekend.
In a five set thriller, the ‘Canes came back from two sets down to win the match 3-2. Veitch’s 34 kills powered the comeback and set a record for most kills in a match in Hurricanes men’s volleyball history.
Veitch had a remarkable hitting percentage of 0.455 while adding two assists and 15 digs.
Veitch currently studies in the Energy Systems Engineering Technology program.
The men’s volleyball ‘Canes currently sit in first place in the ACAA with a record of 9-4.
The ‘Canes return to action on Saturday, February 11 and Sunday, February 12 as they travel to Saint John to take on the UNBSJ Seawolves. Game times are Saturday at 6 PM and Sunday at 12 PM.
