12 Days of Christmas countdown #5: Men’s Basketball nationally ranked
December 21, 2013
When any team makes a long run, regardless of the sport, there are always questions about how strong they’ll come back the next season, usually with higher expectations.
The men’s basketball Hurricanes, of course, made an inspiring run last winter that saw them win the program’s first ACAA championship, followed up by a silver medal at the CCAA championships in Montreal in March. Therefore, observers were keen to see whether or not the Hurricanes were a one-hit wonder, or whether they were there to stay.
So far this season, the men’s basketball Hurricanes are right in the thick of things, and their start makes them the #5 story in our 12 Days of Christmas.
The Hurricanes currently have a 5-2 record, good for a tie for second in the ACAA. They got up as high as second in the CCAA rankings early in the season before a pair of losses dropped them to seventh, where they currently sit.
With longtime assistant coach Josh Whitty now at the helm, many players from last year’s team returned for another shot at glory, including all-stars Alvin Parker and Chase Bowden, along with Jake Kendrick, Steve Ethelston, and Steve Hardy, among others. New recruits like Orlando Palmer and Aaron Evans have also come in to give the Hurricanes more scoring options and different looks.
With that said, it certainly hasn’t been an easy go of it, as various injuries have affected the team’s look at different points in the season. However, the Hurricanes continue to succeed because different players have stepped up each game, whether it was Ethelston in Fredericton against St. Thomas in an early rematch of the ACAA final, Kendrick and Palmer elevating their games to lead the Hurricanes back from a 20-point deficit against Crandall, or Bowden putting up 29 points against Mount Allison in a return from injury, among others.
The men’s basketball Hurricanes figure to be a dangerous opponent regardless of who they play, so the second half of the season should be interesting to watch.
