Jonny Richards in action during the series

Throughout the season, the Holland College Junior Hurricanes and Montague Maniacs were evenly matched.
The teams had split their 10 games 5-5, with Montague scoring two more goals than the Hurricanes.

It was even tighter in the playoffs, with the series tied 2-2 and each team having scored 17 goals in the series.
It only made sense for the fifth and deciding game of their Island Junior Hockey League series to go to overtime.

However, the Maniacs got a five-minute powerplay early in the extra period, and Montague affiliate player Darcy Nicholson scored the winning goal to give the Maniacs a 6-5 overtime victory on home ice to take the series 3-2 and end the Hurricanes' season.

Kayleb Lazaric scored twice for the Maniacs, while Aaron Fitzpatrick had three assists.

For Holland College, Jonny Richards scored twice and added an assist, while John Livingston had a goal and two assists.

Alex Micalef made 34 saves for the win in net for Montague, while Dustin Stevens made 30 saves for Holland College.

The Hurricanes started the game by pressuring the Maniacs in the attacking end, but a blocked shot (?) allowed Lazaric to go in alone on a breakaway, beating Stevens to give Montague a 1-0 lead just 1:27 in.

Richards and Montague's Peter MacLeod traded goals midway through the period to give the Maniacs a 2-1 lead after 20 minutes.

As has become the custom in this rivalry, the back and forth theme continued in the second period. Each team scored twice, including Richards and Lazaric each scoring their second of the game, to give Montague a 4-3 lead after two period.

The Hurricanes struck quickly in the third period, as Livingston scored his second of the series to tie the game at 4-4 just four minutes into the period, making it the fourth time in the game the Hurricanes tied the score.

Holland College went up midway through the third period, as Blake Ozon scored his team-leading fifth of the playoffs to put the Hurricanes up 5-4 with nine minutes to go.

However, Montague was able to push back as captain Matt Myers tied the game at 5-5 with five minutes to go to force overtime.

Just over a minute into overtime, Livingston was ejected for a hit to the head on Montague's AJ McInnis, who returned to play the next shift.

The ensuing five-minute powerplay saw Nicholson convert at 2:33 to lift the Maniacs into a semifinal matchup with the Kensington Vipers.

  • Junior Hurricanes Men's Hockey: Jr Canes Storms Back Shocks Maniacs to Take Series Lead 2-1
  • Junior Hurricanes Men's Hockey: Jr Canes Storms Back Shocks Maniacs to Take Series Lead 2-1

As the seconds ticked by late on Wednesday night, the Holland College Junior Hurricanes were in danger of going down 2-1 in their best-of-5 Island Junior Hockey League playoff series against the Montague Maniacs.

    Then, the winds changed.

Holland College stormed back, tying the game on the powerplay before captain Patrick Lefrank scored the game-winning goal with 5.6 seconds left as the Hurricanes stunned the Maniacs, winning 3-2 and taking a 2-1 series lead.

Each team had stretches where they took the game over, but the Hurricanes were able to capitalize on their opportunities when it mattered at the end.

Holland College drew first blood just past the halfway point of the first period, as a Montague clearing attempt was stopped by defenceman Brandon Barrett.

The St. George, N.B. native wound up and fired a slapshot from just inside the blue line that beat Maniacs goaltender Alex Micalef for his second of the series to give the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead, which they kept through 20 minutes.

Holland College thought they had extended the lead on a powerplay early in the second, but Blake Ozon hit the crossbar from in close, though the net was knocked off to give the Hurricanes a 5-on-3 for 1:03. However, they were unable to capitalize on the opportunity.

Montague tied it late in the second, as a poor line change from the Hurricanes resulted in the Maniacs going in 4-on-1, with Kayleb Lazaric taking a pass from Matt Myers and going high on Holland College goaltender Dustin Stevens.

Montague pulled ahead with seven seconds remaining in the period as a scramble around the Hurricanes net left the puck for Jordan Gallant, who made no mistake to give the Maniacs a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The parade to the penalty box continued for both teams in the third period, as there was more powerplay time than even strength in the third.

With AJ McInnis in the box for diving, the dormant Hurricanes powerplay woke up, and they didn't waste any time.

Holland College's Matt Patterson drove into the Maniacs zone and the puck eventually found its way to Dylan DeGraaf. The Kentville, N.S. native buried the powerplay goal for his second of the series to tie the game at 2-2.
However, DeGraaf took an interference penalty shortly thereafter, sending the Maniacs to the powerplay.

With time running down, the Hurricanes were able to kill off the Montague powerplay, just as they had done on six previous occasions throughout the game.

The kill set the stage for the late heroics from Lefrank, who took a pass from fellow Summerside native Ozon in the slot and fired a wrist shot over Micalef's blocker to send the boisterous Hurricanes fans in attendance into a frenzy.

Stevens was sharp in goal once again, stopping 35 shots while the overage Micalef turned away 23 shots in his first playoff start of the season.

Ozon and Patterson have points in all three games for Holland College, while Barrett and DeGraaf have now scored in back-to-back games.

Through two games this postseason, Stevens has stopped 64 out of 68 shots for a .941 save percentage.

Holland College has a chance to clinch its first playoff series victory in franchise history (counting both IJHL and PEI Junior C Hockey League seasons) in Game 4 on Saturday night at the Pownal Sports Centre at 8:20 p.m.
MacPhail had a goal in the Hurricanes' 5-4 overtime loss in Game 1 against the Maniacs.

Game 4 will also see Hurricanes defenceman Nick MacPhail return to the lineup as the Mid-Isle Matrix were eliminated from postseason play in the PEI Midget AAA Hockey League last night by the Charlottetown Abbies.
Meanwhile, Montague will have defenceman Peter MacLeod and forward Cole MacLeod back in the lineup, as both were serving suspensions in Game 3.

After a big win on Saturday, the Holland College Junior Hurricanes head to the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre on Wednesday with an eye on claiming a series lead.

The Hurricanes will play the Montague Total Assets Fitness Maniacs in Game 3 of their best-of-5 Island Junior Hockey League playoff series, which is currently tied 1-1.

The Hurricanes and Maniacs played each other evenly throughout the season, and their playoff series is staying true to form.

The Maniacs took a 5-4 overtime win Game 1 in Montague on Friday night, while Holland College rebounded in Game 2 with four goals in the third period to take a convincing 6-2 win to even the series at 1-1.

The Maniacs will be without Peter and Cole MacLeod for Game 3, as both are serving suspensions.

The winner of Game 3 will have a chance to clinch the first round series when the two teams meet in Pownal on Saturday, Mar. 2 at 8:20 p.m.

Junior Hurricanes Men's Hockey: Win in Game 2 Ties Series 1-1

Police Academy student, Dylan DeGraaf scores Saturday in game 2

In Island Junior Hockey League playoff action, the Holland College Junior Hurricanes split the first two games of their best-of-5 playoff series against the Montague Total Assets Fitness Maniacs.
On Friday night in Montague, the Hurricanes erased a two-goal deficit to send the game to overtime, but Maniacs captain Matt Myers completed his hat trick five minutes into the extra session to give Montague the 5-4 win.
Myers opened the scoring midway through the first period, fishing out a rebound and beating Dylan McQuaid for a 1-0 Maniacs lead. AJ McInnis extended the Maniacs lead just over a minute later with a shorthanded goal to make it 2-0.
Holland College would get one back 90 seconds later as Matt Patterson, playing his first game against Montague since being traded to Holland College in January, converted on the powerplay off a Pat Cullen shot to make it 2-1. However, Myers answered with his second of the game with six seconds left in the period to give Montague a 3-1 lead after 20 minutes.
Holland College started the second with a four-minute powerplay, but they didn't score until Nick MacPhail got one through from the point five seconds after the powerplay ended. Montague affiliate player Tanner Nicholson answered less than two minutes later to restore the two-goal lead. However, later in the period, Holland College's Will Connolly got one through from the point to make it a 4-3 hockey game after 40 minutes.
The Hurricanes tied it midway through the third, as Connolly used a stretch pass to spring Blake Ozon on a breakaway from centre ice. Ozon made no mistake, going high glove to make it 4-4 and sending the game to overtime, where Myers beat McQuaid to the post just over five minutes in to end the game.
McQuaid stopped 33 shots for Holland College, while Daniel Nicholson made 35 saves in the Montague shot.
On Saturday in Charlottetown, the Hurricanes broke open a tie game with four third-period goals en route to a 6-2 win over the Maniacs to even the series at one game apiece.
The Hurricanes opened the scoring with less than a minute left in the first as Eric Locke sent Dylan DeGraaf in on a partial breakaway. DeGraaf went five-hole on Nicholson to give Holland College a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
The assist was Locke's first of three for the game.
The Hurricanes extended the lead early in the second as Ozon was against sent in on a breakaway, going high glove on Nicholson for the second time in as many nights to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead.
Montague tied the game up with goals from Tyler Gallant and Jordan Gallant less than four minutes apart to make it 2-2 after 40 minutes.
The Hurricanes broke it open in the third with four goals in just over 10 minutes, starting with a goal six minutes into the period by Anthony Cummiskey, one of three overage players honoured by the Hurricanes before the game.
Ozon then scored his second of the night 49 seconds later, redirecting a Jonny Richards point shot past Nicholson for a 4-2 edge. Patterson then continued to haunt his old team, finishing off a play in tigh,t widening the gap to three before Brandon Barrett powered a slapshot past Nicholson with three minutes left to round out the scoring.
Dustin Stevens got the start in Game 2, and he made the most of his opportunity, stopping 29 shots for the Hurricanes while Nicholson turned away 37 for Montague.
Game 3 goes Wednesday night at 8 p.m. in Montague, with Game 4 scheduled for 8:20 p.m. in Pownal, home of Holland College's territorial affiliate. Any minor hockey league players who come in wearing their Red Devils jerseys will get in for free, and regular ticket prices ($5, or free for Holland College students) still apply.
