Holland College English Proficiency Test


Holland College offers language testing for individuals interested in applying to a Holland College program.

Our in-person and paper-based test is comprised of the following sections:

  • Listening (30 minutes): Three short dialogues and questions, and two longer passages and questions
  • Reading (50 minutes): Three articles and questions, and a page of fill-in-the-blanks (Cloze Test)
  • Writing (60 minutes): Choose one topic out of a list of five general topics and write a five-paragraph essay about it
  • Speaking (10 to 15 minutes): Short conversation/interview with the test administrator 

You can take the English proficiency test every three months, and results are valid for one year from your date of successful completion (as of September 1st, 2025).

COST:$60 payable with cash, debit, or credit on the day of your appointment. (As of October 1st, 2025)

Please note: As of January 1, 2026, a fee of $20 will apply if you need to retest a portion of the proficiency test. If a retest of all four sections is required, the cost will be $60. 

ID: You will need to bring a government-issued photo ID with you when you come to do the test.


DISCLAIMER: Holland College uses this test as a placement test. It is not an official English proficiency test. The results are not recognized by other post-secondary institutions.
