NSD – Navigation Safety Domestic

This course is intended to help you prepare for the NS-D Transport Canada exam. The NS-D exam is a three-hour exam and consists of 100 multiple choice questions worth 1 mark each. This exam will test the student’s knowledge of the Collision Regulations under the Canada Shipping Act, 2001, International Light, Shape and Sound Signals, and Small Fishing Vessel Safety Manual TP10038. We recommend that you spend a minimum of three weeks preparing for this exam.

Message from TC:

A new Navigation Safety examination, NS-D (domestic) is presently available for applicants for a Fishing Master, Fourth Class certificate and for applicants for a Master, Limited for a vessel of less than 60 gross tonnage certificate. However, under the following conditions:

  1. The code for the exam will be NS-D;
  2. The candidate will have the choice to challenge either NS 1 or NS-D;
  3. NS-D will be only credited for Fishing Master, Fourth Class and Master Limited less than 60;
  4. A holder of a Fishing Master, Fourth Class or a Master Limited less than 60 wishing to obtain a higher Certificate of Competency will be requested to challenge NS 1;
  5. The candidate is allowed 3 hrs. to write NS-D; and
  6. Seafarers failing NS-D, may re-schedule within 2 weeks (no penalty and this applies to all exams for Fishing Master, Fourth Class and Master Limited of less than 60).
