In this accelerated Legal Administration program, you will learn all the basic administrative duties and establish a solid foundation in civil litigation, family law, corporate law, real estate law, and estate law. You will also take classes in business communications, professionalism and office finance.

The program focuses on the demands of a modern, fast-paced, law office with emphasis on attention to detail, planning and organizing tasks, and meeting deadlines. You will practice your newly learned skills in a 150-hour on-the-job training placement.

Program Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of the Legal Administrative Assistant program at Holland College, graduates will:

  1. Support the needs of clients and legal professionals by using accurate terminology and professional communication strategies, both orally and in writing.
  2. Prepare standard legal correspondence.
  3. Manage the scheduling, coordination, and organization of administrative tasks and workflow within specific deadlines and according to set priorities and procedures.
  4. Manage legal files and records using a records management system to ensure confidential, secure, accessible, and organized records.
  5. Produce legal documentation for corporate, civil, family, real estate, and estate law, ensuring compliance with legal procedures.
  6. Review and proofread documents and correspondence to ensure compliance with legal procedures and grammatical usage.
  7. Operate and provide support to others relating to the use of standard office equipment and technologies.
  8. Use accounting software to manage accounts and bill clients for services. 9. Identify strategies for ongoing professional development to remain current with industry changes, enhance work performance and explore career opportunities.

This course is designed to enable students to learn the skills required to perform basic office procedures for the efficient operation of an office environment. Students learn how to operate telephone systems, provide front line reception and perform duties such as organize meetings, prepare meeting minutes, travel arrangements and scheduling procedures. Students also learn to operate equipment used in the office environment. This course also provides students with the skills necessary to develop competency in basic math for general office finances, bank transactions and management of petty cash.

Explore the basic legal concepts and principles that govern personal and business relationships in Canada. Business Communications

In this course, students acquire competency in writing professional office correspondence including memos, emails and letters, using standardized proofreading and editing techniques. Students are provided the opportunity to demonstrate verbal communication skills by presenting presentations to inform, educate, and entertain. Students also prepare for employment pursuits by creating a personal resume, cover letter and professional career portfolio. Students further prepare for employment by conducting effective job searches and participating in mock job interviews.

Legal Office Procedures and Transcription

This course introduces students to basic legal principles and the legal administrative profession. Students are introduced to; the roles of a legal administrative assistant, the principle of confidentiality, time tracking and docketing, managing files, tickler/bring forward systems, legal correspondence and documentation. Students are also introduced to transcribing legal correspondence and documents using dictation software.
