MSOC | Sanoh named National Player of the Year; Hurricanes ready to open CCAA Nationals with game against Keyano
November 8, 2017
The Holland Hurricanes men’s soccer team will kick off the 2017 CCAA National Men’s Soccer Championship on Wednesday versus the Keyano College Huskies; game time is 2pm AST. The Hurricanes are the 2017 ACAA Champions while the Keyano Huskies are the ACAC Champions from Alberta.
The big news out of Nanaimo, British Columbia however was that Hurricanes fourth-year striker, Ibra Sanoh, was named the CCAA men’s soccer National Player of the Year on Tuesday night at the annual awards banquet. This is the first time a Hurricanes student-athlete has been named a National Player of the Year across any sport.
Sanoh, of Conakry, Guinea, won the award over four other nominees from the PACWEST, ACAC, OCAA and RSEQ conferences. The 6’2” striker was also named a CCAA All-Canadian on Tuesday night and earlier this fall was named the ACAA Player of the Year; it was his fourth time winning both awards. Sanoh was also named as a member of the ACAA first All-Conference team earlier this fall.
In 14 games played in 2017 for the Hurricanes, Sanoh has scored 31 goals in a season that saw the Hurricanes finish the regular season at 12-0 and then sweep the ACAA playoffs with two straight victories.
Wednesday’s game versus Keyano should be the toughest game to-date for the ‘Canes but their head coach feels ready.
“We’ve faced Keyano in the past,” shared Jonathan Vos. “They’ve been a top ranked team all year and have some strong attacking players; our backline will need to be strong. We’re excited to finally get the championship underway.”
A win on Wednesday for the ‘Canes could setup a semi-final match on Thursday with the winner of the Algonquin Thunder/Douglas Royals game, while a loss would have the ‘Canes face the loser with a bronze medal still in their sights.
The full tournament field is made up of the Vancouver Island University Mariners (host) and Douglas Royals (PACWEST Champions) out of British Columbia, Keyano Huskies (ACAC Champions) and NAIT Ooks (ACAC Wildcard) out of Alberta, Durham Lords (OCAA Champions) and Algonquin Thunder (OCAA Wildcard) out of Ontario, Ahuntsic Indiennes (RSEQ Champions) out of Quebec and the Hurricanes (ACAA Champions).
