AOTW | Hurricanes soccer players take Athlete of the Week honours
September 12, 2017
Hurricanes soccer players Katherine Drake and James Briand have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending September 10.
Drake, a fourth year center back with the Hurricanes showed leadership in both games on the weekend as the ‘Canes started their ACAA regular season. Her ability to stay calm and help a young Hurricanes back four was an asset.
In Saturday’s match, a 3-1 victory over the Dal AC Rams, her leadership kept the 2016 leading scorer to no goals while on Sunday, a 2-1 loss to the Crandall Chargers, she led by example in the second half, winning tackle after tackle and moving the ball forward as the ‘Canes pressed for an equalizer.
Drake is currently studying in the Photography program and from Stratford, PEI.
Briand, a second year winger with the Hurricanes had a pair of offensive games this weekend scoring four times in back-to-back victories.
On Saturday, Briand would score in the first half and again midway through the second powering the Hurricanes to a 6-0 win over the Rams. He followed this up with two goals in the second half in Sunday’s 4-1 win over the Chargers in Moncton.
Briand is currently studying in the Sport & Leisure Management program and is from Antigonish, NS.
The Hurricanes soccer teams will be back in action this weekend on the road when they face the UKC Blue Devils on Saturday and the MSVU Mystics on Sunday in Halifax.
The ‘Canes hold their 2017 home opener on Saturday, September 23 at the Terry Fox Complex in Cornwall when they host the STU Tommies.
