From football’s thrilling overtime winner in Fredericton to the men’s and women’s soccer teams both earning six points, here’s what went down in AFL, ACAA and ACBA action.
The Hurricanes women’s soccer team was expected at some point this season to return to last year’s form, and this weekend was exactly that with the return of veterans Hayden Chaisson and Kristyn Taylor.
Saturday, Sept. 26 — 4-0 W vs. Dal Rams
On Saturday, the women’s soccer team picked up their first win of the season against the last-place Dalhousie AC Rams.
The offensive blowout started early. Just 11 minutes in, third-year Karissa George got the ’Canes on the board and they never looked back.
At the 35-minute mark, in her return, fourth-year Kristyn Taylor made it 2-0 before rookie Evelyn Guignion MacFarlane closed out the first half with another goal to make it 3-0.
Just minutes into the second half, second-year Yuki Komine made it 4-0 for the Hurricanes to seal the game.
Third-year goaltender Tasha Kowalchuk made two saves for the shutout, while Taylor had five shots on net to lead Holland College.
Sunday, Sept. 27 — 4-0 W vs. Crandall Chargers
The Hurricanes continued their offensive assault against the Crandall Chargers on Sunday, but it wasn’t until the second half that they hit the scoresheet.
In the 57th minute, George scored the first goal of the game from the right side of the box. Just 11 minutes later, third-year Georgia Doucette made it 2-0 after scoring her first goal of the year.
Another 11 minutes later, in the 77th minute, George found the net again for her second of the game and fifth of the year.
Abby Murphy closed out the game for the Hurricanes, scoring in the 85th minute for a final score of 4-0.
The Hurricanes men’s soccer team bounced back in a big way this weekend with wins against the Rams and the Chargers to put them back in second place in the ACAA.
Saturday, Sept. 26 — 4-0 W vs. Dal Rams
Holland wasted no time getting to work on Saturday, applying offensive pressure from the start against the last-place Rams. Twenty-four minutes in, second-year Hatem Al Masri opened the scoring.
Three minutes later, second-year Kai Nurse continued the scoring for the ’Canes to make it 2-0. There wouldn’t be another goal until the 66th minute, when second-year Harrison Munro made it 3-0 before second-year Walid Lema sealed the deal four minutes later for a final score of 4-0.
Holland finished with 17 shots on net and recorded a shutout.
Sunday, Sept. 27 — 3-2 W vs. Crandall Chargers
Sunday’s match against the Chargers was highly competitive. Holland controlled the play, but Crandall kept fighting back into the game.
Munro opened the scoring in the 18th minute off a pass from rookie Griffin Larade for the Hurricanes before the Chargers tied it 1-1 in the 43rd minute.
The second half didn’t see any scoring until the 73rd minute, when Lema got his second of the weekend to make it 2-1. Munro capitalized on a Crandall defensive mistake in the 87th minute to make it 3-1, but the Chargers applied pressure late and made it 3-2 in the 90th minute.
Holland held on for the win.
Saturday’s game for the Hurricanes football team in Fredericton against the UNB Reds could go down as an AFL game of the year candidate.
In a defensive chess match, the Reds got on the board first with a field goal in the first quarter.
The Reds scored a touchdown with a successful PAT in the second quarter to make it 10-0, but the Hurricanes got a late touchdown from rookie Noah Amos and then a last-second field goal with zero seconds on the clock to make it 10-10 at halftime.
The Reds retook the lead in the third quarter with another field goal to make it 13-10, but shortly thereafter, a strong defensive series by Holland in UNB’s end forced the Reds to take a knee in the end zone for a safety, making it 13-12.
The Reds bobbled a punt return on their own one-yard line with 1:27 left in the third quarter, and the Hurricanes were first and goal before second-year Makhi Magloir caught a pass to make it 19-13 for Holland.
UNB bounced back in the fourth quarter with a touchdown for a score of 20-19. The Hurricanes remained calm, and rookie Greg Sutton punched in a rushing touchdown. The ’Canes opted to go for two points after the touchdown and were successful, making the score 27-20.
A last-minute touchdown by the Reds tied the game 27-27 and sent it to overtime.
The Hurricanes started on defence and got a quick stop. All that needed to happen was for the offence to score to win the game. After a good run by Sutton, Holland brought out its punt team, with second-year John MacGillivray punting the ball through the end zone for a rouge to win the game 28-27.
The baseball team’s struggles continued this weekend, losing both games to the UPEI Panthers.
During the first game, the Hurricanes lost 4-0, but collected six hits while the Panthers had only five.
Rookie Brock Kirkpatrick led the ’Canes with two hits.
In the second game of the doubleheader, Holland lost 9-3 to UPEI.
The Hurricanes got on the board in the top of the second inning after the Panthers committed an error, and Kirkpatrick grounded out to bring home a run.
A walk by fourth-year Matthew Peacock gave the ’Canes the lead at 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but the Panthers’ defence shut down the Hurricanes for the rest of the day.
Rookie Nolan Hill, Wil White, Seth Bulger, Drew Watts, Kirkpatrick and Peacock each collected one hit for Holland, while second-year Jake MacEwen, Peacock and Kirkpatrick each scored a run.
