It was a weekend of adversity for the Holland Hurricanes, as each team battled hard until the end and will take what they learned into next week.
Here’s what went down Saturday, Sept. 19, and Sunday, Sept. 20, as the Hurricanes competed in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA), Atlantic Football League (AFL) and Atlantic Collegiate Baseball Association (ACBA) action.
The women’s soccer team battled hard on the road this past weekend, though they remain winless through four games. There’s reason to believe the results will come.
Saturday, Sept. 19 — 1-0 loss vs. UNBSJ Seawolves
A defensive battle on Saturday saw the Hurricanes tied until the 76th minute, when the Seawolves scored the lone goal of the game.
The Hurricanes’ offence didn’t generate much, with only two shots on net. Second-year centre back Liv MacDougall and fifth-year Emma Macintyre recorded the Hurricanes’ two shots. Third-year goalkeeper Tasha Kowalchuk recorded 12 saves in the loss.
Sunday, Sept. 20 — 3-2 loss vs. STU Tommies
On Sunday, the Hurricanes flipped the script and found themselves in an offensive battle against the Tommies.
The Hurricanes found themselves down in the 39th minute, but six minutes later, third-year midfielder and reigning female athlete of the year Karissa George buried her first goal of the year to tie the game 1-1.
The Tommies responded quickly, going up 2-1 on a penalty kick. The Hurricanes kept pushing for offence, and in the 80th minute, George scored again to tie the game 2-2.
In the 90th minute, the Hurricanes conceded another penalty kick, resulting in a 3-2 loss.
The Hurricanes recorded 11 shots, with George recording four herself, while Kowalchuk made seven saves.
After a great opening weekend, the Hurricanes men’s soccer team hit their first bit of adversity and dropped to a record of 2-2.
Saturday, Sept. 19 — 2-1 loss vs. UNBSJ Seawolves
Just nine minutes into the game, Holland found themselves down, but the ’Canes didn’t hit the panic button just yet. Second-year winger and reigning male rookie of the year Harrison Munro got on the board to tie the game 1-1.
From there, it was a chess match between the Hurricanes and Seawolves, with the next goal not coming until the 70th minute for a final score of 2-1.
Munro recorded two of the three shots Holland got on net, while third-year goalkeeper Kole MacWilliams made three saves.
Sunday, Sept. 20 — 1-0 loss vs. STU Tommies
Sunday’s game for the Hurricanes didn’t have much action, with Holland being shut out. The lone goal for the Tommies came in the 47th minute.
The ’Canes recorded six shots on net, while MacWilliams made seven saves.
The Hurricanes football team lost 43-0 to the Dalhousie Tigers this past weekend.
It was a defensive battle in the first half, as the Hurricanes battled hard and stopped the run, but the offence couldn’t find its groove.
The ’Canes will get tested again next weekend, as they hit the road to take on the UNB Reds.
A less-than-memorable weekend for the Hurricanes baseball team saw them fall to 0-8 on the season after dropping doubleheaders to UPEI and Dalhousie.
Saturday’s first game against the UPEI Panthers saw the Hurricanes lose 15-1, with Nolan Hill recording the lone run. Holland lost the second game 6-1, but the game was tied 0-0 until the fifth inning. Rookie Drew Watts recorded a run and two hits alongside Seth Hansen and Cayle Coffin.
Sunday didn’t get any easier for the ’Canes baseball team, losing the opening game 16-4. Holland was first to get on the board when Hansen hit into a double play, but one run scored. First-year Brock Kirkpatrick led the Hurricanes with three hits in three at-bats. Matt Peacock, Jack Pepeljugovski and Wil White all scored a run for Holland.
The second game was closer, with a final score of 2-1, as both teams played strong on the mound.
Peacock started the game for the ’Canes and recorded 18 outs. Kirkpatrick went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Hurricanes in hits, while White scored the lone run.
In the season opener for the Holland Hurricanes women’s rugby sevens team, the Hurricanes lost 51-0 to the UNB Reds in Fredericton.
Holland has a bye this weekend, so they have just under two weeks to practise for the next tournament, Oct. 3 in Charlottetown.
Cross country opened its season at the first meet of the year this past weekend at the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus in Truro.
Second-year Emilie Douccete finished eighth overall with a time of 28:58.8, finishing 1:11.8 behind first place. Bianca Barnett finished 14th with a time of 32:02.8.
Brayden Linthorne placed highest for the Hurricanes, finishing 14th with a time of 35:01.9, 6:12.3 behind first place. Miles MacPherson was the second-highest finisher for the Hurricanes in the men’s race, placing 28th with a time of 39:20.1.
