Hurricanes Weekend Preview – January 24-25, 2026

By Reegan MacAulay

It’s an action-packed weekend for the Holland Hurricanes on both sides of the Confederation Bridge!

Of the 10 games between volleyball, basketball, and hockey set to be contested this Saturday, Jan. 24, and Sunday, Jan. 25, eight will be on the road in New Brunswick, and two will be at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Sunday’s two basketball home games will be themed around the Bell Let’s Talk mental health initiative, with fans encouraged to wear blue in support of mental health awareness.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of this weekend’s games in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) and Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) competition.

Women’s Volleyball

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes are back after taking a weekend off and will embark on their first road trip since November 2025.

Riding an incredible high of five consecutive wins and eight within their last 10 matches, the third-ranked Hurricanes (8-4) will be tasked with the challenge of heading to Fredericton, N.B., and beating another team on a lengthy surge – the second-place St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies (9-3).

The Tommies – 18 points – have won their last seven games and are just two points ahead of Holland – 16 points – in the conference. For the latter, it’ll be a simultaneous case of trying to leapfrog STU in the standings, break out of a tie for third with MSVU, and run away from UNBSJ and Dalhousie, each two points behind the Hurricanes.

Holland and STU previously battled on Nov. 1, 2025, at the McMillan Centre, with the Tommies taking the match in five sets. The two upcoming games will conclude the regular-season series between the two squads.

Hot Hurricane Headliners

  • Abby Macdonald - Third in the conference with a .340 hitting percentage. Fourth in blocks per set with 0.75. A combined 10 kills, two assists, one ace, one dig, and five blocks in the team’s doubleheader sweep against MSVU on Jan. 10-11.
  • Jenna O’Neill - Leads the team in kills with 132, and is sixth in the conference in that category. Recorded 24 kills, one assist, and 22 digs in the team’s previous doubleheader.
  • Maria Moores - Executed her best doubleheader performance thus far on Jan. 10-11, putting up a total of 21 kills, two assists, three aces, 14 digs, and three blocks against MSVU.

Catch both games live on ACAA.tv. Start times are Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 1 p.m.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball Hurricanes will join the women in Fredericton, N.B., this weekend to duel with the men’s STU Tommies.

It has remained a roller-coaster season for the men, who recently split a two-game weekend series against the UNBSJ Seawolves on Jan. 17 and 18. Amidst a tie with Crandall for third in the standings, each with 6-6 records and 12 points, the Hurricanes head into the upcoming weekend looking to prevent their biggest rivals from extending their current win streak of nine games into double digits.

The Tommies (11-1), who have beaten Holland in the previous two ACAA championship semifinals, have been lights out since their close 2025 ACAA championship finale loss to USTA, having lost just one of their 12 matches played so far. Ironically, their one loss has come against Holland – 3-1 on Nov. 1, 2025, at the McMillan Centre.

That win for the Hurricanes was part of a doubleheader split on Nov. 1-2, 2025, with this weekend’s two-game set being the final regular-season one for them and STU.

Hot Hurricane Headliners

  • Carson Gray - Third in the conference in kills per set with 3.31. Second in kills with 162, which leads the team. Logged 23 kills, two assists, three aces, 17 digs, and three blocks in the two games against UNBSJ last weekend.
  • Keiran Hamlin - The most recent Hurricanes Male Athlete of the Week. Registered 12 kills, five aces, six digs, and seven blocks last weekend for his best performance since his Hurricanes and ACAA debut back in October 2025.
  • Liam Galway - Started the second half strong with 68 assists, three kills, two aces, seven digs, and three blocks across two games.

Watch both games live on ACAA.tv – Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes continue to follow a similar journey to the women’s volleyball team, also aiming to maintain their ongoing hot momentum this weekend.

Tied with MSVU for second in the conference, each with 8-2 records and 16 points, and two points behind the league-leading STU Tommies, Holland looks to not only possibly take second for good, or even tie for or steal the conference lead, but achieve back-to-back perfect months – one game, one win in December, and currently on pace for a 5-0 January.

There are all sorts of scenarios and opportunities that’ll be at play this weekend when the Hurricanes face the Mount Allison Mounties in an away-and-home doubleheader, with Saturday’s game in Sackville, N.B., and Sunday’s match in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

The Mounties currently sit eight points behind Holland in the standings with a 4-5 record and a two-game skid. The two teams previously met on Nov. 2, 2025, in Sackville, N.B., where Holland emerged victorious, 71-64. This weekend’s games will be the last between them in regular-season competition.

Hot Hurricane Headliners

  • Nykeva Brown - Not only the most recent Hurricanes Female Athlete of the Week, but has recently taken the conference lead in points with 148 and points per game with 14.8. She’s also fifth in rebounds per game with 7.4, second in field goal percentage with 47.4, and fifth in steals with 24, which is one number behind…
  • Karissa George - Positioned fourth in steals with 25. She added 28 total points and went a near-perfect 12-for-13 in free throws during the team’s perfect doubleheader against UKC last weekend.
  • Nadia Barrington - The conference leader in blocks with 12, and is fourth in free-throw percentage with 74.1. She is two positions behind Karissa George in that category.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball Hurricanes seek to end January on a high note following a nail-biting doubleheader at home last weekend that barely didn’t go their way.

The men will join the women with a two-game affair against the Mount Allison Mounties, starting on Saturday in Sackville, N.B., and ending on Sunday in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

This doubleheader will be important for both teams as they’re each within a tight bubble around the final playoff spot. STU (9-1), MSVU (8-2), and UNBSJ (6-4) are far ahead, with the worst of the three carrying 12 points, while Holland (3-7) and Crandall (3-5, two games in hand) are tied for fourth with six points each, and Mount Allison and UKC share 2-7 records with four points.

Both Holland and Mount Allison are currently experiencing cold streaks, with the former at two losses and the latter at four. They last played each other on Nov. 2, 2025, in Sackville, N.B., which was the day when the Hurricanes captured their first win of the season.

Notably, Sunday’s game will mark the team’s fifth attempt at winning at home. In their four previous home matches, they have not lost by more than seven points, turning each appearance in front of the home crowd into a barnburner. It ultimately comes down to their clutch performance and converting the narrow margins into a victory, with last weekend’s results proving they’re inching closer in each effort to accomplishing that.

Hot Hurricane Headliners

  • Zachary Dawkins - Led the team with 36 total points in last weekend’s doubleheader. He currently sits fourth in the conference in points with 182, fourth in points per game with 18.2, and third in free-throw percentage with 90.9.
  • Quinton Martin - Impressed during Saturday’s portion of last weekend’s doubleheader with 13 points and a perfect 5-for-5 free-throw effort.
  • Spencer Rossiter - Leads the conference with 24 steals. Stood out during the Sunday portion of the Jan. 24-25 doubleheader with 15 points, a 6-for-14 field-goal record, and three rebounds.

Women’s Hockey

The women’s hockey Hurricanes return to ACHA regular-season competition for the first time since November 2025 this weekend.

Following a strong showing at a national women’s hockey tournament in Quebec two weekends ago, the third-ranked Hurricanes (0-4) look to finally find the win column when they visit Wolfville, N.S., this Saturday and Sunday, to take on the Acadia University Axewomen (4-2).

While the Axewomen are in a much better position standings-wise, currently tied with Cape Breton University (CBU) for the league lead with eight points, they’re fresh off their first regular-season regulation losses since the 2023-24 season. They will be hungry to regain momentum against the team they’ve lost the previous three ACHA championships against.

The two teams previously fought on the weekend of Nov. 1-2, 2025, in Charlottetown, P.E.I., with Acadia coming out on top 4-2 and 2-1.

Holland is far behind both Acadia and CBU in the standings, but this weekend will serve as a major opportunity to start catching up and build confidence for the rest of the season.

In ACHA competition, Cassie Gordon leads the team with four goals and four points, followed by Josee Allain with three assists, and Kristyn Taylor with one goal and one assist. At the Quebec tournament, names like Bri Hughes, Emma Carey, and rookie Rachel McFadyen got on the scoresheet. Veteran goaltender Emma Arsenault and rookie netminder Olivia Lowe have shared the net back and forth, each playing stellar when given the call.

Both games are expected to be live-streamed on the Acadia Women’s Hockey Facebook page. Saturday’s game begins at 6 p.m., and Sunday’s at 2 p.m.
