Women’s Volleyball

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes started the weekend with a tough 3-1 loss against the Crandall University Chargers on Saturday in Moncton, N.B. Then, they bounced back perfectly on Sunday on their home court, sweeping the Mount Allison Mounties across three sets.

After a 25-19 win in set one, Holland never looked back en route to their 3-0 game victory, making Mount Allison struggle to put a good attack together. The Mounties did have a few leads in the third and final set, showing signs of a potential comeback, but a pile of attack errors dug them into a deep hole.

Fifth-year left-side Jenna O’Neill (Cornwall, P.E.I.) led the Hurricanes with 14 kills, one assist, one ace, and two digs. Fifth-year outside/libero Morgan Hoskins (Bishop’s Falls, NL) led in digs with 10, and second-year setter Madelyn Tomyn (Prince Albert, SK) had her best performance yet with 15 assists and two digs.

After the weekend, all three teams – Holland (2-3), Crandall (2-3), and Mount Allison (2-2) – are tied for fourth in the conference with four points each.

The Hurricanes will head on the road next Saturday, Nov. 15, to play the USTA Dragons in Pointe-de-L’Eglise, N.B.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball Hurricanes split their road-trip doubleheader against the Crandall Chargers in Moncton, N.B., beginning with a 3-2 win on Saturday, and concluding with a 3-1 loss on Sunday.

Saturday’s match saw the Hurricanes claw back from a 2-1 deficit to steal the victory dramatically. Each team traded set wins until Holland took the fourth and fifth sets back-to-back, with just two points separating the teams in the final one.

Fourth-year left-side Carson Gray (Stratford, P.E.I.) led the Hurricanes with 25 kills, three assists, and five digs. Third-year middle Brett MacAusland (Summerside, P.E.I.) and fifth-year outside hitter Nathan Baker (Clarenville, NL) each scored 12 kills, and also combined for two assists and 13 digs.

Sunday’s contest was deja vu until the fourth and final set, where Crandall put together a strong clutch performance and prevented Holland from another comeback rally.

Following the weekend, Holland is 3-3 and fourth in the conference with six points, while Crandall is 4-2 and tied for second with eight points.

The men will join the women next weekend in Pointe-de-L’Eglise, N.B., with one difference – the men will play a doubleheader against the USTA Dragons on Saturday, Nov. 15, and Sunday, Nov. 16, compared to the women’s single match.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes were unsuccessful in their pursuit of three consecutive wins to start the season, falling short 71-55 to a strong Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics on Saturday in Halifax, N.S.

MSVU emerged victorious in their home-opening match, which began with solid defense from both sides in the first quarter. Once the second quarter rolled around, the offense exploded, particularly for the Mystics, who rallied off momentum from a buzzer-beating layup in the previous quarter.

MSVU’s improved play on both sides of the court proved to be a challenge for Holland the rest of the way. While the Hurricanes did have an impressive beginning to the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run, the Mystics quickly answered back and held control till the final buzzer.

Second-year shooting guard Nykeva Brown (Halifax, N.S.) led the Hurricanes with 14 points and added a 5-for-11 field-goal record, a 4-for-6 free-throw record, nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Second-year guard Karissa George (New Glasgow, N.S.) scored 10 points and contributed four field goals on 13 attempts, two free throws on three attempts, six rebounds, one steal, and one block.

Heading into the new week, Holland is 2-1 and tied for second with four points, while MSVU remains unbeaten at 3-0 and leads the conference with six points.

The Hurricanes are back on the court next Saturday, Nov. 15, in Saint John, N.B., to take on the UNBSJ Seawolves.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball Hurricanes fell victim, 79-61, to a hungry MSVU Mystics squad aiming for their first win of the season in their first home game on Saturday, Nov. 8, in Halifax, N.S.

While the Hurricanes put in a decent push from the second quarter onward, especially in the third (outscored MSVU 25-15 in the quarter alone), their first-quarter struggles (outscored 20-7) against a superior Mystics team that swiftly set the tone after the ball drop haunted them all game.

Fourth-year guard Zachary Dawkins (Edmonton, Alberta) led Holland with 21 points and logged nine field goals on 22 attempts, two three-pointers on six attempts, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Fellow fourth-year guard Dorrell Bedminster (Hamilton, Ontario) registered 10 points, a 2-for-5 three-pointer record, a perfect 4-for-4 record in free throws, one rebound, one assist, and one steal.

Holland and MSVU are both now 1-2 and tied for third in the conference with two points each.

The men will join the women in Saint John, N.B., next Saturday, Nov. 15, to challenge the men’s UNBSJ Seawolves.
