Hurricanes Weekend Preview – January 17-18, 2026

By Reegan MacAulay

It’s all home-court action for the Holland College Hurricanes this weekend, with doubleheaders for three clubs!

Both basketball teams opened the second half with big victories on the road, and look to put their hot momentum on full display in front of their fans for the first time in 2026. Meanwhile, the men’s volleyball squad returns to play for the first time since November 2025.

Here’s what’s set to go down in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) competition at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement in Charlottetown, P.E.I., on Saturday, Jan. 17, and Sunday, Jan. 18.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball Hurricanes are back and hungry for more after an up-and-down first semester with five wins and five losses.

Sitting third in the conference with a 5-5 record and 10 points, six behind USTA and two ahead of Crandall, it’s been some time since Holland has hit their home court; however, the last time they did, they pulled off a doubleheader sweep against Dalhousie to close the first half, and they look to bring the same energy this weekend.

The Hurricanes will face the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves – tied for fourth in the conference at 4-6 – for the third, fourth, and final times within the regular season this Saturday and Sunday.

This doubleheader follows nearly three months after the two teams battled to begin the season on the weekend of Oct. 25-26 in Saint John, N.B. They split the two-game series, each winning 3-1.

Multiple players had a strong conclusion to the first half in November, and aim to enhance their performances as the playoffs approach. Veteran Carson Gray totalled 38 points and 32 kills in the team’s previous doubleheader, and is currently second in the conference with 139 kills and third with 3.48 kills per set. Rookies Zachary Warren and Gabriel Lee had impressive showings in November and continue to get better each game.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes look to rally off their ongoing three-game win streak and push for the conference lead in a pair of games this weekend.

Fresh off an explosive 85-48 victory over Crandall last Saturday in Moncton, N.B., the Hurricanes are two points behind a two-way tie for first place and have a chance to shake things up with a home-crowd doubleheader against the winless University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils this Saturday and Sunday.

The Blue Devils remain winless after seven games and are far behind Holland in the standings, with 12 points separating the two teams, who previously played each other on Nov. 29 in Halifax, N.S. The Hurricanes won 88-61.

The most recent Hurricanes Female Athlete of the Week comes from this squad. Sophomore Nevaeh O’Connell led the Hurricanes with 22 points in last Saturday’s win against Crandall. She also holds the fifth-best three-point percentage in the conference with 38.3, just behind second-place Maryn Kline at 42.4.

Catch this weekend’s action live at www.youtube.com/@GoCanesGo. Saturday’s game is at 1:00 p.m., and Sunday’s is at 11:00 a.m.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball Hurricanes finally got their revenge against Crandall last weekend and will continue their chase up the standings towards the conference’s best this weekend.

Coming off a game that saw Holland say, “The third time’s the charm,” in a 74-60 win over the Chargers, an opportunity for a continued second-half surge presents itself this Saturday and Sunday, when the winless UKC Blue Devils come to town for a two-game set.

Like the women, the men’s Blue Devils still have yet to emerge victorious, lying at the bottom of the conference after seven matches. They and Holland previously clashed on Nov. 29 in Halifax, N.S., with the Hurricanes coming out on top 86-79.

The reigning Hurricanes Male Athlete of the Week is fifth-year player and first-year Hurricane, Vashon Ford. Last Saturday’s game was his best performance since joining the program. He recorded 15 points, went 6-for-14 in field goals, and successfully rebounded 17 times while also being a force to be reckoned with defensively.
