Basketball players, Aki Kobayashi and Jordan Holness, have been named the Holland Hurricanes Athletes of the Week for the week ending March 8.
Kobayashi, a first-year guard from Hyogo, Japan, was named the Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Rookie of the Year on Friday night at the ACAA Basketball Championships in Halifax, Nova Scotia; she was also named as a member of the first All-Conference team.
On Friday in ACAA quarter-final action, Kobayashi scored 11 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and two steals while going four-for-four from the free throw line, as the Hurricanes defeated the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves, 79-62.
She followed this up with 22 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals on Saturday, in an 86-72 semi-final loss to the eventual conference champions, the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics.
Kobayashi is currently studying English for Academic Purposes at Holland College.
Holness, a second-year guard from Toronto, Ontario, was named the ACAA Player of the Year on Friday at the ACAA Basketball Championship awards banquet; he was also named the ACAA Defensive Player of the Year, as well as to the first All-Conference team.
In Saturday’s 87-80 semi-final loss to the MSVU Mystics in overtime, Holness scored 21 points, four rebounds, two steals and one assist
Holness is currently studying in the Heritage Retrofit Carpentry program at Holland College.
