XCR 'Canes make history with ACAA championship victory

The Holland Hurricanes men’s cross-country running team captured gold at Saturday’s 2019 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Cross Country Running Championships hosted by the Holland Hurricanes at the Mark Arendz Provincial Ski Park at Brookvale, PEI.

The championship had six ACAA members represented in both the men’s and women’s races consisting of 59 runners.

On the women’s side, it was an impressive performance from the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics, as Grace Anderson took home gold followed by her teammate, Hannah Baillie securing silver. Dalhousie Agriculture Campus (Dal AC) Rams runner, Chloe Toombs, finished with bronze in a field of 33 runners.

The top Hurricanes runner was Rebecca Levy who came in fifth, followed by Marth Day (15th), Teanna Letkeman (17th), Alicia McIsaac (20th) and Zora Wendt (21st).

The Mystics took home the conference banner in the women’s team division with 30 points, while the Mount Allison University Mounties secure second with 33 points, and the Dal AC Rams finished in third place with 38 points. The Hurricanes finished in fourth place.

It was a day to remember for the Hurricanes on the men’s side as their top-three runners finished third, fourth and fifth in a field of 26 runners propelling them to their first conference championship in team history.

The Hurricanes were led by Benjamin Nwaogazi-Awuja (third), Ben Sullivan (fourth) and Carter Van De Wiel (fifth), James Wilmot (13th), Tristan Rampersad (16th) and Trent Lambert (17th).

The race was won by Kieran Thornell of the Dal AC Rams, followed by Donald Dewolfe (Mount Allison) and the Hurricanes Benjamin Nwaogazi-Awuja in third.
