Hockey 'Canes fall to Axewomen in opening weekend

The Holland Hurricanes returned to the ice over the weekend when the women’s hockey team hosted two Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) regular season games versus the Acadia University Axewomen.

At the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre in Montague, PEI, the Axewomen went on to pick up 4-2 wins on Saturday and Sunday; they improve to 4-0-0 on the season while the Hurricanes fall to 0-2-0 to open up their regular season.

In the team’s home opener on Saturday, it was Acadia that got on the board first; Melissa Atkinson scored at 7:25 of the opening period to give the Axewomen the 1-0 lead.

The ‘Canes would push back when Claire Renken scored the unassisted equalizer at 9:12 of the first to tie the game at 1-1.  The Axewomen would retake the lead with just 44 seconds remaining in the period when Brooke Switzer scored to give Acadia the 2-1 lead entering the first intermission.

After no scoring in the second, Acadia doubled their lead in the third when Atkinson scored at 6:13 on the power play to put the Axewomen up 3-1.  They would score again at 9:07 when Reghan Hitlz would make it 4-1 for Acadia.

The ‘Canes would not back down, managing to score their second goal of the game at 10:33 when Meaghan Taylor finished a pass from Breanna Cormier to cut the Axewomen lead to 4-2.

Lindsey Minard was in goal for the Hurricanes in the loss, while Brittany Longley was the winning goaltender for Acadia.

The Axewomen went 1-for-1 on the power play while the Hurricanes went 0-for-1.

On Sunday, the Hurricanes got off to a better start, when Emma Dixon’s point shot found the back of the net at 6:01 of the first to give them the 1-0 lead; Jacy MacMillan and Claire Renken were credited with the assists.

Acadia would bounce back with 3:07 remaining in the period to tie the game at 1-1 when Melissa Atkinson scored her fifth of the season.

A strong second period would separate the Axewomen from the Hurricanes in Sunday’s game after goals at 1:40 (Allie Norris, power play) and 10:08 (Atkinson) made it 3-1 entering the third period.

Another goal at 1:28 increased the Axewomen lead to 4-1 after Sarah Cottreau scored in the third period.

With 1:33 remaining in the game, Paige Deighan scored for the Hurricanes to cut the Axewomen lead to 4-2; Bethany MacDougall was credited with the assist.

Minard was once again in goal for the ‘Canes while Sara Jackson was the starting goaltender for Acadia.

Acadia went 1-for-1 on the power play in the win while the ‘Canes went 0-for-2 in the loss.

The Hurricanes will return to the ice on Friday, November 15 when they host the MidIsle entry in the Island Women’s Hockey League at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre at 8:15pm in exhibition action.

The ‘Canes next ACHA regular season games take place on Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1 in Sydney, Nova Scotia, when they visit the Cape Breton University (CBU) Capers (0-2-0) for a pair of games.
