The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s volleyball teams were in action this weekend playing Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular season games. 

The women’s Hurricanes picked up a four-set win on Saturday at home versus the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies before travelling to Halifax, Nova Scotia on Sunday and defeating the University of King’s College (UKC) Blue Devils in straight-sets.  The men’s Hurricanes would fall to the STU Tommies on Saturday at home in straight-sets.

On Saturday the women’s Hurricanes used set wins over the Tommies of 25-22, 21-25, 25-17 and 26-24 to claim their fifth win of the regular season.

Abby Hyndman had an exceptional game, recording 22 kills for the ‘Canes; tying the second highest single-game, all-time total for the women’s volleyball Hurricanes.

Zayley Murphy added 13 kills in the match while Sam Gerbig added 11 in the win.

Marissa Macaulay recorded 42 assists for the ‘Canes while Dana Trainor added 26 digs and six assists; Kateia Barenaba recorded five aces with Gerbig adding three.

With the loss, the STU Tommies fell to 2-3 on the season.  They earned a victory on Sunday over the Dalhousie Agricultural Campus (Dal AC) Rams to move into a tie for third place at 3-3.

On the road on Sunday versus the UKC Blue Devils, the ‘Canes won by set scores of 25-19, 25-22 and 25-21.

Hyndman led the attack once again for the Hurricanes with nine kills while Gerbig added eight and Murphy chipping in with five.

Macaulay had a team-high 15 assists along with two aces and eight digs. Gerbig had another strong serving game with five aces while also adding five digs.

Murphy led the way in digs for the ‘Canes with nine in the match, while Dana Trainor and Jenna MacFarlane each added six.

The Blue Devils fall to 3-3 following Sundays defeat and sit in a three-way tie for fourth place in the standings.

With the weekend victories the ‘Canes remain undefeated in ACAA regular season play at 6-0; they sit in a tie for first place with the Mount Allison Mounties in the standings.   The ‘Canes and Mounties will meet on Saturday, November 30 at 2pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement (CCE) for a battle for first place.  The Hurricanes will then host their rivals, the Mount Saint Vincent University (MSVU) Mystics, on Sunday, December 1 at the CCE at 1pm; the Mystics are 5-1 this season and in second place.

In the men’s Hurricanes only game this weekend, they fell to the STU Tommies by set scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 28-26.

Alex Joudrey had nine kills to lead the offense for the Hurricanes with Simon Archibald adding seven.

Brandon Hastings recorded 22 assists while Archibald and Nathan Willis each had eight digs.

The Tommies improve to 3-1 this season and move to second place in the conference with the victory.

With the loss, the ‘Canes fall to 1-5 on the season and sit in fourth place in the ACAA standings entering the holiday break; they return to action on Saturday, January 11 when they host the Tommies once again at 2pm at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
