The Holland Hurricanes were double winners at the 2019 Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) Soccer Championships this weekend in Cornwall, Prince Edward Island at the Terry Fox Sports Complex.

The women’s team kicked off the day with an exciting 3-2 victory over the St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies, before the men were victorious over the University of New Brunswick-Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves, 1-0, claiming double-gold for Holland College.

Both Hurricanes teams will now prepare to compete at the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Soccer Championships; the women’s tournament takes place in Edmonton, Alberta with the men’s event being played in Oshawa, Ontario.

In the women’s final, the Tommies got on the board first with Leandra Upton found the back of the net in the 3’ to get them the early 1-0 lead.  This lead would last through the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Hurricanes scored twice over a seven minute span (53’ and 59’) when Emily Lepine propelled the ‘Canes to the lead.  This lead would only last ten minutes as the Tommies, Nikita McCartney, scored in the 69’ to tie the match at 2-2.

The back and forth excitement continued as Emily Cormier put the Hurricanes ahead once again, scoring in the 71’ and giving the Hurricanes the 3-2 lead, which is how the match would finish.

Nicole McInnis (Hurricanes) and Kianna Laurin (Tommies) were the goalkeepers in the match; the ‘Canes outshot the Tommies in the game, 16-14.

On the men’s side, the top-ranked Hurricanes got on the board in the 14’ when Tegan Misener scored to give Holland College the 1-0 lead.

Over the course of the next 76-minutes of play, the Seawolves and Hurricanes exchanged chances in hopes of scoring the games next goal.  In total, the Hurricanes outshot the Tommies in the game, 9-7, but neither team would find the back of the net, giving the Hurricanes the 1-0 victory.

Hayden Porter (Hurricanes) and Chris Badju (Seawolves) were the goalkeepers in the match.

This was the fifth ACAA Championship in team history for the women’s Hurricanes, while it was the ninth for the men and sixth straight.  This was only the second time that both the men’s and women’s soccer Hurricanes captured the conference championships in the same year.
