Football ‘Canes dominant in home win over Seawolves

The football Hurricanes earned their second win of the season on Saturday in Cornwall at the Terry Fox Sports Complex as they continued their 2021 Atlantic Football League (AFL) regular season against the University of New Brunswick Saint John (UNBSJ) Seawolves.

The Hurricanes, now 2-3, are in third place in the standings behind the Dalhousie University Tigers and University of New Brunswick (UNB) Red Bombers, each sitting at 4-1; the Seawolves fall to 0-5.

On Saturday in Cornwall, already ahead 7-0 early in the first, Brian Fitzgerald continued his strong season with the ‘Canes, scoring and increasing the Holland College lead to 14-0.  The momentum in the first quarter continued for the ‘Canes, when Cameron Wall scored to increase the lead to 21-0 at the end of the quarter.

The ‘Canes continued to roll in the second when Fitzgerald put the Hurricanes up 28-0 after an incredible reception led to a touchdown, followed by a Brandon Ndiweni rushing touchdown in the final minute of the opening half, giving Holland College the 35-0 lead at the break.

The ‘Canes would add another touchdown and a field goal in the second half to cruise to the 45-0 victory.

The Hurricanes will now turn their attention to the final game of the regular season, and their final home game of 2021, this Saturday, October 23 versus the UNB Red Bombers; kick-off is scheduled for 7pm at the Terry Fox Sports Complex in Cornwall.

The ‘Canes fell to the Red Bombers earlier this year in Fredericton, 43-8 on September 19.

This potentially will be a preview of the first-round playoff matchup between the two teams on October 30, with the UNBSJ Seawolves able to play spoiler with a victory over the Dalhousie Tigers this weekend.
