'Canes advance to national semi-final with victory

The Holland Hurricanes punched their ticket to the national semi-final game at the 2019 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) National Men’s Basketball Championship on Thursday with a 120-77 victory over the Langara College Falcons.

The Falcons (Langley, British Columbia), the tournament hosts, trailed by five points after the first quarter before the Hurricanes pulled away and never looked back.

The Hurricanes held leads of 26-21, 53-34 and 86-60 after the first three quarters.

Jordan Holness led the Hurricanes in the win, scoring 24 points and adding seven rebounds, five assists, five steals and a block.  Connor Therrien contributed with 20 points, two rebounds an assist and two blocks.

Travis Adams had a strong game off the bench, scoring 19 points and completing the double-double with 12 rebounds and three assists.  Martin Campbell went on to score 18, Roosevelt Whyley scored 16 and Jace Colley, the sixth player to score double-digit points for the ‘Canes in the win, picked up ten.

The top performer for the Falcons was Royce Sargeant with 22 points in the loss.

Travis Adams (Hurricanes) and Royce Sargeant (Falcons) were the Players of the Game.

With the victory, the Hurricanes will now meet the Sheridan College Bruins (Oakville, Ontario) in national semi-final action at 11:30pm Atlantic time on Friday.

The Bruins defeated the Nomades de Montmorency (Laval, Quebec) in quarter-final play on Thursday, 105-83.

The Hurricanes are ranked as the top team in Group B while the Bruins are ranked second.

During the regular season, the Sheridan Bruins had a record of 15-5, finishing in second place in the Ontario Collegiate Athletic Association (OCAA) West Division standings; they ultimately won the conference championship over the Humber Hawks by a score of 86-70.

The team that earns the victory on Friday night will advance to the CCAA National Championship game on Saturday at 11:30pm Atlantic time.  The other semi-final on Friday features the Vanier College Cheetahs (Montreal, QC) taking on the Vancouver Island University Mariners (Nanaimo, BC) at 9:30pm Atlantic time.

A loss in Friday’s semi-final sends you into the bronze medal semi-final game at 4pm Atlantic time on Saturday versus the winner of the Humber College Hawks (Etobicoke, ON) and Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) Trojans (Calgary, Alberta) bronze medal quarter-final game taking place on Friday at 5pm Atlantic time.
