The Holland Hurricanes men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted the Crandall Chargers, UNBSJ Seawolves and DalAC Rams over the long weekend, with each of the Hurricanes teams playing three games in four days.  The women’s Hurricanes would go on to win twice while the men’s team went three-for-three.

In the women’s game on Friday versus the Crandall Chargers, the ‘Canes trailed 17-14 after one quarter but battled back to tie it at 36-36 at the half. The Hurricanes would use a strong third quarter to take a 62-48 lead and won the game 74-64.

Tekera Smith led the way on offense for the ‘Canes with 19 points while adding six rebounds and five steals.

Lexi Maccinnis added 15 points and seven rebounds with Ashley Plaggenhoef recording 14 points, seven assists, and two steals.

Kassie Little hauled in a team-high ten rebounds along with three assists, four steals, and three blocks while Keionia Beals came off the bench to score ten points, three rebounds, and two assists.

On Sunday against the UNBSJ Seawolves, the ‘Canes struggled to get anything going on offense in the first half and trailed 35-20.  The Hurricanes would win the second half but it wasn’t enough to complete the comeback as they lost 64-54.

MacInnis had a game-high 19 points to lead the offense for the ‘Canes with Desiree Oakley adding 11. MacInnis added six rebounds, four assists, and two blocks while Oakley added 13 rebounds for a double-double along with five steals.

On “Islander Day” Monday, the Hurricanes defeated the Dal AC Rams 93-26.

The ‘Canes led by scores of 18-5 after one, 44-11 at the half, and 66-17 after three.

MacInnis led the way in the Hurricanes final home game of the season with 25 points, ten rebounds, seven assists, and six steals.

Sydney Goode had 17 points, five rebounds, and three assists while Plaggenhoef recorded 13 points and ten rebounds for the double-double; she also contributed with four rebounds.

Smith had ten points, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals in the win while Briontae Riley came off the bench with seven points and 17 rebounds.

The 2-1 weekend puts the ‘Canes record at 7-13 which has them in sixth place in the ACAA standings. The Seawolves are now at 8-11 (fifth) while the Chargers drop to 4-16 (seventh). The Dal AC Rams are 0-19 (eighth) this season.

On the men’s side, the Hurricanes started strong on Friday, taking a 32-17 lead after the first quarter and a 65-35 lead at the half. The ‘Canes would continue to build their lead and would go into the fourth up 102-51, eventually winning 125-73.

Roosevelt Whyley led the way on offense for the Hurricanes with 31 points along with six rebounds, four assists, and three blocks.

Connor Therrien had 24 points with six threes and four assists while Jace Colley had 22 points, seven rebounds, four assists, and two steals.

Martin Campbell had 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists with Jordan Holness adding seven points, six rebounds, ten assists, and four steals.

On Sunday versus the UNBSJ Seawolves, the ‘Canes held a slim 17-13 lead after one and a 45-33 lead at the half.

The Hurricanes would turn it on in the second half and score 42 points in the third quarter to build up an 87-55 lead, eventually winning 119-72.

Whyley had 32 points, 11 rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks while Colley had 29 points, eight rebounds, two assists, and three steals in the win.

Campbell had the third triple-double by a men’s player since the 2010-11 season with 18 points, 11 rebounds, and 11 assists.

Travis Adams had 14 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals off the bench.

Holness added nine points, 12 assists, eight steals, and four blocks for the ‘Canes.

On Monday, the ‘Canes won a feisty affair over the Dal AC Rams by a score of 118-90.

All five starters reached double figures in scoring led by Colley with 29 and Whyley with 28.

Colley added 11 rebounds, five assists, and a block while Whyley recorded nine rebounds, three assists, two steals, and three blocks.

Therrien had 14 points, five assists, and three steals, Campbell had 14 points, 11 rebounds, eight assists, and three steals and Holness had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two steals for Holland College.

Agak Lual came off the bench to record seven points, ten rebounds, one assist, one steal, and four blocks with Adams adding six points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one block.

With three victories over the weekend, the Hurricanes are 20-0 on the season and lead the conference while the Seawolves are 10-9 (fourth), the Rams are 6-13 (tied for fifth) and the Chargers are 4-16 (eighth).

The men’s and women’s Hurricanes will finish up their regular seasons on Saturday in Halifax when they take on the MSVU Mystics at 4 and 6pm (w/m).
