This course is designed for new entrants to the industry who want to work in engine room as oiler. Candidates who have successfully completed this course can write the Transport Canada Engine Room Rating exam at any Transport Canada office after obtaining three months of sea time.

This course has three components: welding (60 hours), electrical (30 hours) and basic machining (60 hours). According to Section 11 of TP 13720 – Alternative Path to Practical Skills Training for Marine Engineers, this short course provides guidance to Engineer candidates, and to the marine community in general, on an alternate path to fulfil the requirements of Practical Skills Training when applying for the 4th Class Engineer certificate bearing the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW) endorsement.

This course is designed to provide knowledge of corrective actions to be taken in problem solving in the recognition of signs and symptoms of a deteriorating function of ships machinery. Upon successful completion of this course an applicant will receive a training certificate that is required to obtain one of the following certificates of competency or endorsement:

Transport Canada Ship Safety Bulletin 09/2017 allows seafarers working in the engine department to challenge exams to obtain their 4th Class Engineer Certificate of Competency.
Our Engineering Department offers self-study packages to help candidates who would like to challenge the Transport Canada exams. Students who are using our self-study packages will have access to an instructor for their questions. The time and the duration of the student-instructor sessions will be planned by the instructor.
Once the student has completed each study package and feels ready to challenge the exam, they can contact their local Transport Canada office to schedule an exam.Applied Mathematics (3MA) / Tuition - $1,700
This course is intended to prepare students for the Transport Canada 3MA exam, which will test their theoretical knowledge of applied mathematics. The self-study package provides the student with the knowledge of arithmetic, logarithms, algebra, graphics, geometry, and trigonometry. The TC exam is 3½ hours in length and consists of problem-solving essay-style based calculations, of which the student must answer 6 of 9 questions.
Applied Mechanics (3APM) / Tuition - $1,700
This course is intended to prepare students for the Transport Canada 3APM exam which will test their theoretical knowledge of applied mechanics. The students who have successfully completed this self-study package acquire the knowledge of basic physics concepts such as vectors, force, simple machines, density, and friction. The TC exam is 3½ hours in length and consists of problem-solving essay-style based calculations, of which you must answer 6 of 9 questions.Thermodynamics (3HH) / Tuition - $1,700
This course, which is intended to prepare students for the Transport Canada 3HH exam, will test their theoretical knowledge of thermodynamics. The self-study package provides the student with the knowledge of thermal properties, the gas law, heat transfer principles and thermal relations such as the indicator diagram and fuel consumption. The TC exam is 3½ hours in length and consists of problem-solving essay-style based calculations, of which you must answer 6 of 9 questions.Electrotechnology (3ELC) / Tuition - $1,700
This course is intended to prepare students for the Transport Canada 3ELC exam, which will test their theoretical knowledge of basic electrotechnology. The students who have successfully completed this self-study package will be conversant with subjects such as simple electric circuits, voltage, conductors, switchboards, and magnetism. The TC exam is 3½ hours in length and consists of problem-solving essay-style based calculations, of which you must answer 6 of 9 questions.Naval Architecture (3NAR) / Tuition - $1,700
This course is intended to prepare students for the Transport Canada 3NAR exam, which will test their theoretical knowledge of Naval Architecture. The students who have successfully completed this self-study package will have the knowledge of ship geometry, transverse and longitudinal static stability and ship’s structural components. This exam is 3½ hours in length and consists of problem-solving essay-style based calculations, of which you must answer 6 of 9 questions.
