ACTIVE THREAT INSTRUCTOR
This three-day course covers topics that include active shooter-background, goals, roles and responsibilities of first responders, preparation, training, operations, debrief and stress, movement contact, search modes and corner turning formations. Scenarios involving the use of simunition are also be conducted. A new outdoor component which includes shooting from inside and around your emergency vehicle, as well as how to identify several points of cover on your vehicle, and how to utilize good tactics from an open area and moving formations.
This advanced five-day instructor-level course incorporates carbine safety, marksmanship, tactical training, range officer duties and instructional techniques. Upon course completion, successful participants will be qualified to train an entry level officer as a patrol operator on the AR-15. Standard police issue sidearms will also be utilized in the live fire training portion of this course.
The price of the course includes the cost for ammunition.
CARBINE INSTRUCTOR RE-CERTIFICATION
This course is designed to re-certify current carbine instructors. The course consists of one day in the classroom and two days of range training, and includes a review the previous information taught on the Carbine Instructor's course. Range training consists of 900 rounds per participant, and is included in the cost of tuition.
CRISIS INTERVENTION AND DE-ESCALATION
This five-day certificate course integrates Communication De-Escalation and Use of Force training, creating a blended approach to dealing with escalated situations. The course was developed in response to the overwhelming need by industry concerning officer interactions with individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. It incorporates best practices for Communication De-escalation and situational assessments using a framework incorporated into the NUFF model. This course is instructed by two subject matter experts, one from the Social Sciences and one from Use of Force.
In addition to the in-class sessions and testing, course participants will be involved in live scenarios and teach back sessions.
This 10-day course provides the participant with the necessary tools to conduct thorough field interviews, interrogation, and statement analysis. The course also deals with the components of a forensic interview, beginning with basic interviewing skills and culminating in advanced interrogation theory and practical application. Moving on to statement analysis, the course provides the theory and hands-on experience delving into the interpretation of unnecessary words, connectors, and phrases.This course naturally deals with the various components that make up human behaviour and psychology.

INTOX EC/IR II QUALIFIED TECHNICIAN COURSE
This five-day course is designed to train law enforcement officers in the theory and operation of the "Intox EC/IR II" approved breath testing instrument. The course is conducted with the support of forensic specialists and senior field instructors from various police agencies with a background in alcohol and toxicology. The course is conducted in accordance with the recommended standards of the Canadian Society of Forensic Science and the National Alcohol Test Committee. Successful participants will be awarded a certificate of completion identifying them as qualified technicians in accordance with the Criminal Code of Canada. Notification of completion is forwarded to the provincial Attorney General for designation.
Prerequisite: Participants must be peace officers involved in the detection of impaired drivers. Other interested parties should contact the APA.
MODERN DAY LEADERSHIP
Years of research on the current trends impacting police organizations throughout the Atlantic region culminated in the combination of traditional lessons with up-to-date evidence-based processes that create this innovative and reflective program. Through extensive connections and interviews with police members we have developed the program that best fits the leadership needs of a modern police team.
The nine days of learning are a combination of experiential learning mixed with a wide variety of models that can be applied to develop individual leadership capacities; however, the learning also requires a deep amount of self-reflection. The facilitators pose questions around the essential skills of a successful leader in contrast to the natural strengths and unconscious blind spots of the learners.
Part of the learning experience uses tested personality and behaviour inventories to allow for deeper discussions including stress inventories, personality style assessments and emotional intelligence metrics. True leadership development simply does not happen without deep self-reflection and we incorporate the tools to do that. We will apply the Big Five personality styles indicator and the PXT Select Inventory process to name just two of the multiple inventories we will use to help you discover the path to the applied science of leadership in a public safety environment.
On completion of the course, participants are offered the opportunity to complete an organizational project customized for their own team by applying the skills and knowledge acquired during the training. Phonse MacNeil and Tim Brodie will provide coaching and mentorship for the full six months of the project.
From theory to knowledge acquisition to project implementation, participants are completely supported. There simply is no other leadership development learning experience like this.

OFFICER SAFETY/USE OF FORCE INSTRUCTOR
The Officer Safety/Use of Force Instructor course is designed to develop serving law enforcement or peace officers into certified officer safety and use of force instructors.
Upon successful completion, participants on this course will be certified to provide quality instruction on cutting edge officer safety and use of force methods.
The course is a combination of the historic Nova Scotia Officer Safety Instructor course and the cutting edge use of force courses at the Atlantic Police Academy, and is approved by the Province of Nova Scotia Department of Justice.
This course covers the latest developments in officer safety techniques and use of force, including advanced ground control tactics, safe and effective handcuffing techniques, current strategies involving the use of tactical communication, how to reduce agency liabilities when dealing with subjects suffering from excited delirium and suicide by cop syndrome, control techniques with drawn firearm and certification in the most recent vehicle stop procedures.
Successful applicants also become certified instructors in conducted energy weapons (Tasers).
OFFICER SAFETY/USE OF FORCE INSTRUCTOR RE-CERTIFICATION
This is an advanced five-day instructor level course awarding participants recertification in all APA control tactics such as: tactical handcuffing, arm levers & takedowns, pressure points, ground control, personal weapons, and Oleoresin Capsicum to name but a few. Officers will also receive education in scenario-based training, feedback, and faciliation.
Participants should bring all needed equipment including: vests, hand restraints, batons, gym clothes, sneakers, and will be required to meet the current standards of the APA Use of Force course which includes practical control tactics, evaluations, the APA Use of Force written exam and the National Use of Force Framework exam (NUFF).
This advanced five-day instructor-level course is designed to deliver the necessary instruction to serving officers to provide them with the tools and certifications to deliver quality weapons instruction to their department or agency in the proper use of pistols. Participants receive the knowledge and skills necessary to proficiently organize and competently conduct pistol qualifications, policies and procedures in the safe operation and maintenance of a shooting range, to distinguish the differences between hand gun qualifications vs. hand gun training, and remedial instruction in weapon skills in order to help, if necessary, fellow officers meet their annual qualification standards.
PISTOL INSTRUCTOR RE-CERTIFICATION
This course is designed to re-certifying current pistol instructors. The course consists of one day in the classroom and two days of range training. Participants review the information taught in the Pistol Instructors course, including nomenclature, safety precautions, loading, unloading, magazine changes (emergency, quick and tactical), stoppages, coaching, roles of the instructors, scoring, target analysis, range briefing and calling the line. New topics covered include lesson plan development, designing a course of fire, roll over prone, teaching methods, reflexive shooting, introduction to shooting from the sitting position, concealed/plain clothes drawing techniques, and different trigger types (DAO, DA/SA, DAK, and striker fire).
Range training will consist of approximately 1,000 rounds per participant, and is included in the cost of tuition.
TASER INSTRUCTOR COURSE
This two-day course covers the certification of instructors in the training and use of the TASER X26/P (X2 if required), Each candidate will be certified as a TASER/CEW Instructor, enabling them to certify others as users under the guidelines of the TASER Training Academy.
This five-day experience covers leadership strategies for police and public safety drawn from lessons learned by the Royal Canadian Airforce while deploying their teams to the high stress operations in Afghanistan. Leveraging on the solid research leaders can learn the skills necessary to see, on average, a 30% increase in effectiveness and efficiencies in their organization. By learning the five basic leadership styles we call "the fundamentals", participants in this course will begin to see how they can leverage conflict, transforming it from a negative experience to an experience of unconditional appreciation, inclusion, and respect. The facilitators for this learning experience, Phonse MacNeil and Tim Brodie, are seasoned professionals with decades of experience in operational settings. Outcomes include: Participants gain insight into their current unconscious leadership style, and options to expand their command presence; Participants use actual conflict scenarios to learn previously unseen perspectives of team-building; Participants learn to create the tools necessary to create effective operational plans; Participants learn how to apply Acceptance and Commitment Theory to increase awareness of what their team needs to accomplish goals.
