Many not-for-profit organizations are guided by a volunteer board of directors. No matter the reason for volunteering, these passionate individuals possess a vested interest in the well-being and direction of a particular board or volunteer organization. Respecting these desires, in many cases, board members and staff lack familiarity with key topics, policies, and board operational procedures. This challenge creates significant liability for board members, staff, and clients of any not-for-profit organization. The Leadership Engagement Training program is designed to bring awareness to many different aspects of being a board member. The programs goal is to help current or future board members gain the knowledge they need in order to be successful not only as individuals but as the entire board. First, participants will meet for a 1.5 day retreat where they will engage in discussions on various board topics and interact with selected, expert guest speakers. Next, each participant will receive login credentials for Holland College's Learning Management System (referred to as SAM). It is here where course content will be accessible to all participants 24/7 and participants will be able to study and explore program content asynchronously and on their own time. All participants will meet for a second 1.5 day retreat to finish the program. Again, participants will explore curriculum, interact with guest speakers, and finally, celebrate completion of the program in a community based, group setting. Topics covered includes: Board Composition, Leadership Fundamentals, Fiduciary Responsibility, Financial Literacy, Community Engagement, Human Resources Fundamentals, Communications, Conflict Resolution, Succession Planning
