Hurricanes Weekend Preview: October 10-11

By Noel Arnason

It’s Thanksgiving weekend, so football is the only team playing in the regular season, while basketball has its first pre-season exhibition games.

Here’s what’s happening Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, in the ACAA and AFL.

Football

After two big wins in a row, the Hurricanes football team is heading to Halifax for a rematch against the No. 1-ranked Dalhousie Tigers, who beat them 43-0 in Week 2.

This is the most important game of the season yet for the ’Canes, as beating the Tigers can give them first place in the league while locking up home-field advantage.

The catch is that Holland will have to beat Dalhousie by at least 44 points to take the tiebreaker, due to the Tigers’ 43-point win in Week 2.

The other way the Hurricanes can lock up first place is by beating the Tigers this weekend and then having UNB beat Dalhousie in Week 6.

Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at Wickwire Field.

Players to watch this weekend are quarterback Troy McLaren, receiver Mikey Henneberry, linebacker Nolan McCallum and defensive lineman Mason MacKenzie.

Basketball

The men’s and women’s basketball teams get their first taste of real competition Saturday as NCAA Division III Maine Maritime Academy travels down for two exhibition games.

This will be a great test to see how the teams are looking for the season after both had big recruiting classes.

The women’s tip-off is at 4 p.m., with the men’s game at 6 p.m.

Next Weekend

Next weekend, baseball, soccer, cross-country and rugby return to action alongside football.

The Hurricanes baseball team is hosting the ACBA playoffs, which run from Friday, Oct. 16, to Sunday, Oct. 18. The games will be played at Memorial Field at Victoria Park.

Soccer returns home as the Hurricanes host the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday, who the men’s team is chasing for first place in the ACAA. On Sunday, they host the STU Tommies.

Cross-country has its third meet of the season at home in Brookvale.

Rugby 7s has its last regular-season tournament at Dalhousie and is looking for its first win.

Football closes out its regular season in Saint John against the Falcons.
