Hurricanes Weekend Recap – January 31-February 1, 2026

By Reegan MacAulay

Four games. Four wins. A perfect weekend for the Holland Hurricanes volleyball programs.

Both the women’s and men’s volleyball teams had a spectacular end to January and beginning of February this past weekend at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

Here’s what went down in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) regular-season action and at the latest track and field meet on Saturday, Jan. 31, and Sunday, Feb. 1.

Women’s Volleyball

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes have separated themselves from the conference’s mid-pack and surged back toward the front of the standings after a 3-1 statement win over the league-leading Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday and a 3-0 straight-set sweep of the Crandall Chargers on Sunday.

The Mounties were first to lead on Saturday, hanging on in a thriller of a first set that went as far as 29 points. The second set also needed extra time, and the Hurricanes powered through to take it 26-24. They went back-to-back in the third and fourth sets, 25-18, to defeat the conference’s best.

Sunday’s match was purely dominated by Holland, who never allowed Crandall to score more than 16 points in a single set and played excellent defense.

Now, in the regular season’s final month, the Hurricanes sit fourth with a 10-6 record, a two-game winning streak, and 20 points. They’re four points ahead of a tie between Dalhousie and MSVU, two behind UNBSJ for third, and six behind Mount Allison for the conference lead.

The Hurricanes have two doubleheaders and two weekends remaining before the playoffs, starting next weekend against MSVU on Saturday, Feb. 7, in Halifax, N.S., and against USTA on Sunday, Feb. 8, at the MCCE.

Men’s Volleyball

The men’s volleyball Hurricanes brought the brooms out against the men’s Crandall Chargers for a full weekend sweep at the MCCE.

The Hurricanes began the doubleheader with a straight-set victory on Saturday, controlling the entire match from start to finish. While Crandall had a few good runs, every effort wasn’t enough against Holland’s stout attack and brilliant clutching.

The Chargers brought a bigger battle on Sunday, forcing the second game to one extra set and the Hurricanes to pick up the pace. Ultimately, Holland narrowly sealed the deal in the fourth and final set, 26-24.

Now, with every team at 16 games played, meaning four games left per team, the Hurricanes are tied for third with UNBSJ, each with 8-8 records and 16 points. They are four points ahead of Crandall, who remains underneath the playoff cutline, and six points behind USTA for second.

Holland will host USTA next weekend – Saturday, Feb. 7, and Sunday, Feb. 8 – at the MCCE.
