Hurricanes Weekend Recap - February 21-22, 2026

By Reegan MacAulay

The Holland Hurricanes basketball, hockey, and track & field programs took to the court, ice, and track on the weekend of Saturday, Feb. 21, and Sunday, Feb. 22, 2026.

Most notably, the women’s basketball team snapped a lengthy skid to finish the regular season, the women’s hockey squad assured everyone that they’re still well within the hunt for a regional four-peat, and the track & field club brought home several championship medals.

Here’s what happened in Atlantic Collegiate Athletic Association (ACAA) and Atlantic Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) regular-season competition, and more at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) in Charlottetown, P.E.I., and in Moncton, N.B.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball Hurricanes returned to their winning ways to end the ACAA regular season, earning a pair of home-court victories, 73-53 and 73-60, over the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday and Sunday at the McMillan Centre for Community Engagement (MCCE) in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

During Saturday’s doubleheader opener, each team exchanged points in the first quarter, but the Hurricanes took both offensive and defensive control in the second and third quarters, outscoring UNBSJ 50-28. That surge kept them comfortable the rest of the way en route to their win.

Sunday’s game saw a competitive battle before halftime, with the Hurricanes down 36-35 after two quarters. Holland slowly pulled ahead through the third quarter and then dominated the fourth, with multiple three-pointers boosting their late-game explosion. Notably, rebounding improved compared to Saturday, with 56 on Sunday versus 38 on Saturday.

Nykeva Brown was the team’s engine over the weekend, totalling 40 points, 17 rebounds, nine steals, and five assists. Rookie Sophie LeClair showcased rebound dominance with 22 and was strong defensively with nine steals. Karissa George and Robyne Driscoll added strong offensive sparks on Sunday, combining for 35 points and 14 rebounds.

The Hurricanes, now 11-7 with 22 points, have taken third place from Mount Allison, but it should be noted that the Mounties have two games in hand while 10-6 with 20 points. Those two games will be played next weekend. The results will decide who earns the third seed for the 2026 ACAA Women’s Basketball Championships on March 6-8 in Halifax, N.S.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball Hurricanes dropped both games of their ACAA regular-season doubleheader finale, 91-45 and 82-63, against the UNBSJ Seawolves on Saturday and Sunday at the MCCE.

On Saturday, the Seawolves laid a beating ahead of halftime, outscoring the Hurricanes 56-21. Holland slowed UNBSJ’s offense down in the third and fourth quarters, but the damage had already been done. The team struggled offensively – a 25% shooting percentage, plus 25 turnovers.

The Hurricanes showed improvements in their shooting early in Sunday’s match and kept the deficit to three, 38-35, at halftime. They fought hard in the second half, but ultimately couldn’t overcome UNBSJ’s lead and again struggled with turnovers, resulting in another tough loss.

Quinton Martin pioneered the weekend effort with 26 points, five assists, and six rebounds. Jaidon Martin led the team on Sunday with 15 points. He logged six field goals on 14 attempts and three three-pointers on six tries.

Holland concludes the regular season at 6-12 with 12 points, now with their sights set on the 2026 ACAA Men’s Basketball Championships on March 6-8 in Halifax, N.S.

Women’s Hockey

The women’s hockey Hurricanes closed out the home portion of their ACHA regular-season campaign with an impressive doubleheader sweep of the league-leading Acadia Axewomen on Saturday and Sunday at the Eastlink Centre in Charlottetown, P.E.I.

A 3-1 win on Saturday and a 2-1 victory on Sunday earned the Hurricanes a three-game winning streak and four wins in their last six games – a significant improvement following a winless 2025 portion of the season with four consecutive losses.

Saturday’s game saw team captain Kristyn Taylor come in clutch with a standout third period, scoring the game-winning goal early in the frame, and sealing the deal with a highlight-reel, final-minute insurance marker. Josee Allain added the other goal, and rookie goaltender Olivia Lowe denied 22 of 23 shots en route to her second win of the season.

Although Sunday’s match featured just three total goals, the offense was livelier than Saturday’s opener, which led to an intense goaltender duel between the league’s two top statistical netminders. After missing last weekend’s doubleheader and serving as the backup on Saturday, Emma Arsenault returned in goal and put on a masterclass, turning away 26 of 27 shots.

Gabrielle LeBlanc put the Hurricanes on the board in the first period with a power-play goal, and Abbey Gordon doubled their lead in the second on another power play. Sophie Oliver broke the shutout for Acadia just past the third period’s halfway mark, but the Axewomen were unable to complete the comeback.

Following the weekend, the Hurricanes improved to 4-6-0, and the Axewomen dropped to 7-5-0. Holland remains mathematically eligible for second place, which they’ll attempt to steal next weekend when they wrap up the regular season against CBU on Feb. 28-March 1 in Sydney, N.S.
