'CANES ANNOUNCE MADDY KOUGHAN AS NEW HOCKEY HEAD COACH

By Noel Arnason

Charlottetown, PE - Holland College is excited to announce the hiring of Maddy Koughan as the new head coach of the women’s hockey team. Koughan brings a wealth of experience being an assistant coach the last two seasons with the Hurricanes, and being a former AUS hockey player.

Koughan started her hockey career at a young age with the Pownal Red Devils Minor Hockey Association, in that time she also got to participate in the Atlantic Challenge Cup Team. From there she started her AUS hockey career with the Mount Allison Mounties from 2015-2020, in that time she also got to be a member of the 2015 Junior Women's Hockey League team where they competed in Finland, Estonia and Latvia.

Following her time with the Mounties, Koughan kept playing with the Murray River Golden Girls Recreational Hockey team and the Central Senior Women’s hockey team on the Island.

Koughan commented on her new role saying stepping into the role of head coach is about more than a new title - it’s about continuing a culture she already helped build.  "Hockey has always been more than a game. It’s a family and over the past two seasons, I’ve had the privilege of calling the Canes Hockey Team, my family. Together, we built a strong foundation within our program, creating a culture of competitiveness, accountability, professionalism, and unity as we pursued our goals. Stepping into my new role with the Canes family, I’m determined and extremely proud to share my love of the game, build upon the legacies of the past and contribute all I can in our growth towards our future.

Adam Smith,  Director of Athletics and Recreation at Holland College, is confident that the Hurricanes newest addition will help lead the program into an exciting new era. “ Hiring Maddy Koughan marks a defining moment for Holland College and our Hurricanes program. Her leadership, passion, and proven ability to develop athletes will elevate our women’s hockey team to new heights. As we continue to grow both our program and the league, Maddy will be a driving force in building a culture of excellence, competitiveness, and pride. At Holland College, we are fully invested in the future of women’s hockey—and this is just the beginning.”

The ’Canes will look to defend their championship for a fifth straight season as they head into training camp this fall.
