School of Performing Arts students present third annual student showcase

March 17, 2014

Charlottetown, PE Students from Holland College’s School of Performing Arts (SoPA), a partnership with Confederation Centre of the Arts, will be wrapping up another school year with the presentation of their student showcases later this month.

With 44 SoPA students participating, and the anticipation that the events will be sold out, as they were last year, the showcases will be held over four nights at two different venues. Music Performance students will showcase Tuesday, April 22 and Wednesday, April 23 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at The Factory Cookhouse and Dancehall. Dance Performance, Theatre Performance and Performing Arts Foundation students will showcase Friday, April 25 and Saturday, April 26 at 7:30 p.m. at The MACK.

“The Student Showcase is a fantastic way to feature the talents of the School of Performing Arts students and highlight the results of their hard work all year. The Music Performance students will get the opportunity to perform the different music styles they’ve learned and played in their classes this semester. The showcase will feature two R&B and pop ensembles, the jazz and Latin ensemble, an improv ensemble, the Outreach Music Ensemble and more,” said Music Performance head instructor Alan Dowling. The venue sponsor for the Music Showcase is The Factory and equipment sponsor is Long and McQuade.

Students in the one-year Performing Arts Foundation, and the two-year Dance and Theatre Performance programs will present songs, dance, and theatrical sketches. Peggy Reddin, Director of Arts Education at Confederation Centre and SoPA instructor said preparing their pieces for the showcase has been a stimulating experience for the students.

“In the Performing Arts Foundation and Dance and Theatre Performance programs we’ve focused on telling our own stories, on being genuine in our performance, so it’s really exciting to see the students responding to that in their material, and even creating their own works,” she said.

Tickets to the Music Performance Showcase are $10 and are available at the door. Tickets for the Dance and Theatre Performance and Performing Arts Foundation Showcase are $15 and are available at the Confederation Centre Box Office, online and at the door.
