Monday, July 19, 2010

(L-R)Paul Murnaghan, program coordinator for golf programs at Holland College, Chris Irwin, Titleist Footjoy representative for Atlantic Canada, Trevor Giggey, winner of the tournament and head professional at Fox Meadow, while Mike Rowan, eastern Canadian sales leader for Titleist Footjoy, and Pat Decoste, Canadian Professional Golf Association zone team captain look on.

Charlottetown, PE - Holland College alumni and instructors burned up the course at Fox Meadow last week at the Atlantic Professional Golfers Zone Championship, with alumnus Trevor Giggey, the host professional at Fox Meadow, making a dramatic charge on day two of the championship to win by two strokes over an elite group of professionals.

Giggey fired a second round 69 to go with a first round 74 that had left him three strokes off the pace entering the final round. He played solidly in the third last group of the day, with only a minor hiccup on the tenth hole, where he double bogeyed. It was clearly a popular victory for all in attendance. Giggey was watched by friends and family and the large staff that works with him at the Fox Meadow Golf Club. Giggey, who is a graduate of Holland College's Professional Golf Management program and a former Holland Hurricanes varsity player, was defending his title as the Zone Champion; but this was a special victory.

"It feels good to defend on home soil. It was a good day to score. Going into the round I thought I would need a 69, but I put that out of my head and just stuck to my game plan, which was more aggressive than on day one," he explained.

About 25 players in the tournament were Holland College alumni or instructors. Blair MacPhail, an instructor in Holland College's golf programs, won the senior's championship. Holland College was a presenting sponsor of the event.

Paul Murnaghan the program coordinator for the golf programs at Holland College couldn't be more pleased.

"Holland College is very excited to become involved as a sponsor for this event. It seemed a natural fit. Of the field that competed here this week, half of the competitors were either alumni or employees of the college. Obviously having a Holland College alumnus like Trevor claim the championship is just a bonus. We are very proud of the impact Trevor and other graduates of our programs are making in both the local and broader golf communities. It is important for us to support our students during their education and after graduation. Thanks to host Fox Meadow and staff for organizing a fantastic event, and a big thanks to the members who volunteered their time," he said.

The CPGA approved one-year Professional Golf Management program and the two-year Golf Club Management program at Holland College prepare students for careers in the golf industry.
