Welshmen Community Band appoint new band director
Friday, March 8, 2013
Mark Parsons, newly-appointed director of the Holland College Welshmen Community Band, prepares for a rehearsal.
Charlottetown, PE -Charlottetown Rural band director Mark Parsons has taken over from Alan Dowling, the founding director of the Holland College Welshmen Community Band.
Dowling is stepping down as band director after almost five years in order to spend more of his time on the development of Holland College's Music Performance program and the School of Performing Arts (SoPA). Maria Driscoll, coordinating director of SoPA and a member of the band committee, said the band and the college appreciate all that Alan has done to develop the band.
"Holland College has, and continues to be, unbelievably fortunate to have Alan here. His vision of the Welshmen Community Band helped to shape it, and his ability to engage with the musicians, and to keep them engaged, enabled us to create a band of which Holland College, Prince of Wales alumni, and the Island community at large can be very proud," she said.
Parsons is an accomplished band director and an award-winning musician. Driscoll said that she is confident that the band is in good hands.
"Mark has taught band at the high school level for 16 years, and has been band director for the Acadia Summer Music Institute for five summers. The Welshmen, although sad to see Alan leave, are looking forward to playing under Mark's direction."
"I'm enjoying working with the band and we are looking forward to our first concert together," said Parsons.
In addition to playing two concerts a year, some band members have been involved in drum lines, pep bands for football games, a jazz band, and graduation ceremonies. The next Welshmen band concert will take place 7:30 p.m. on April 16 in the gymnasium of the Centre for Community Engagement on Holland College's Prince of Wales campus. Admission is free, but donations of dry goods for the student union food bank are greatly appreciated.
