Sussex Golfers Justin Shanks and Brett Wilson coming to Holland College and will look to bolster Men's Golf Team
Tuesday, July 10, 2012
Justin Shanks and Brett Wilson of Sussex, NB have recently decided to come to Holland College this fall
Justin Shanks and Brett Wilson are currently ranked #1 and 2 junior golfers in New Brunswick. They have been playing golf together since they were 10 years old and will soon be roommates at Holland College, both enrolled in Golf Club Management. They both have impressive golf resumes, some of which is outlined below:
NB Junior Championship - July 3-5, 2012:
Justin placed 1st and Brett placed 2nd, both qualifying as two of the 3-man NB Team to play at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship at Osprey Ridge, Bridgewater, NS at the end of July.
This is a dream come true for both of these boys; in 2006, at 12 years old, they were flag-bearers for the Canadian Junior Boys event held at their home course in Sussex, NB. Now they are both competing six years later.
This will be the first time at this national event for Justin, whereas Brett qualified 2 years ago (held in Richmond, BC) when he was 16 years old.
Both boys led their high school AAA Varsity team to three consecutive championship victories. In 2011 they competed nationally at the Confederation High School Golf Classic in London, Ontario, placing an impressive 7th out of 42 teams. Both Justin and Brett have shared MVP honors for their high school team.
Brett was named 2011 NB Player of the Year, achieved by accumulating points from playing various junior tournaments in NB throughout the year. Currently in 2012, Justin is leading the way in points, with Brett a short 4.5 points behind in second place.
Their friendship shows both on and off the courses they play. They both have had coaching with the Louis Melanson Golf Academy in Moncton, NB, travelling together for a number of years. When they are not competing against one another, they are teaming up together whenever they can.
Albert Roche, Holland College Athletics and Recreation Director is excited that Shanks and Wilson have committed to the Hurricanes for this fall.
"We are very pleased that these two impact golfers and dedicated students have decided to come our way this fall. They both have proven themselves on the golf course in competitive situations and we are excited that they have made the decision to join the Hurricanes family. We have high hopes for our golf team's this fall and I anticipate these two young-men playing a big role," said Roche.
