Hurricanes Women's Hockey: Host Women's Hockey Challenge Series this Weekend
Thursday, January 19, 2012

The Holland Hurricanes women are excited to host the January stop in the Maritime Intercollegiate Challenge Series at the Charlottetown Civic Centre this weekend. The tournament is the second of five events featuring university teams from Bishops, UNB, Acadia, Sainte-Anne, and Cape Breton and the host Holland College. The six teams compete for placement in the five tournament format before the top two teams playoff for the league title.
For the Hurricanes this weekend will be an important opportunity to move up the standings as the Canes are currently placed fifth after the first tournament in November. The first year coaching staff consists of Chris Aiken as head coach along with assistants Robyn MacDonald, and Genna Phalen. All three have worked hard to improve on the fundamentals and create a team personality that is built on hard work.
Coach Aiken admits the team has to build on the results of their first tournament to be successful this weekend. "We have had quite a break in play and we have a lot of players who are new to this level of competition. When we combine these two factors our goal will be to improve on our endurance and focus in order to get some wins". In the first tournament Aiken recognized the challenges, "We were impressed with several teams, especially UNB, who had good depth and competed hard throughout the entire game". The coaches are hopeful that the friendly confines of the Civic Centre will help produce some favorable results. "Our players should respond well to playing at home and we are confident they will raise their game to a new level"
"Our goal is to hopefully win 3 games. We have strong goaltending, with both Holly MacLeod and Jessica Enman having great work ethic and will not quit. Our defense is anchored by Mary Katherine Power and Haley Mullen. Up front some players to watch are Kristen Moen, Meagan Ferguson, Molly Gotell, Candice Arsenault, and Allison Squires".
Play begins on Saturday with the Hurricanes playing the Capers from Cape Breton at noon.
