Charlottetown, PE - The Holland College Junior Hurricanes have been accepted into the P.E.I. Junior C Hockey League for this year's upcoming season. The Hurricanes will join the Charlottetown Abbies, Morell Flyers, North River Island Excavators Flames, Pownal Red Devils, South Side Lynx, Tignish Perry's Construction Aces and the newly accepted Montague Norsemen.
Head Coach and General Manager Daniel Cudmore said the college is really anxious to get things started and get on the ice.
"We've had a great group of volunteers working very hard this summer and fall to make things possible and we're all ready to get things going."
The team's goals include developing a great hockey program that will be the topic of conversation throughout the college, and encouraging students to attend games and make lots of noise, said Cudmore.
"We want this hockey program to be at its highest level possible, on and off the ice."
The Hurricanes main goal, as a new team, is to develop team spirit as soon as possible, Cudmore added. The team's goal through training camp is to select the 20 players who compliment each other styles the best.
"We're not looking for 20 individuals but 20 team guys," he said. "In the end, like every other team, our one goal is to win."
The team will have Hurricane pride, as the team jerseys will have "Hurricanes" on the nameplate rather than the players' names.
"That's what is important, guys giving their all out on the ice every night for this team," said Cudmore. "The team will represent anyone who has ever studied at Holland College, the memories you build by being a student stay with you for the rest of your life, so our guys better come ready to play hard or they'll find themselves in the stands rather than our bench."
Training camp begins Friday Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. with registration, followed by an intrasquad game at 6:30 p.m. Camp will resume Oct. 9 at with a second intrasquad game at 5:45 p.m. The first home exhibition game will be Saturday Oct. 23. The entire training camp takes place at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
All home games will be played out of the Charlottetown Civic Centre, with the exception of the Nov. 10th home game, which will be played out of the Montague Wellness Centre, closer to the college's students in that area.
