Holland Hurricanes Varsity Golf Team prepares for fall golf season
Wednesday, August 25, 2010

Holland College Hurricanes golfer Jeremy Stevenson at the 2009 PING CCAA Open Golf Championships hosted by St. Clair College in Windsor, Ontario. Stevenson is one of many players looking to represent the Hurricanes this fall as they compete for regional (ACAA) and national (CCAA) championships.
Charlottetown, PE - The Holland Hurricanes men's and women's golf teams will be back on the course this fall competing in several competitive events. The fall golf season will be highlighted by the ACAA Titleist Footjoy Championships hosted at Fox Meadow Golf Club in Stratford on October 2nd and 3rd, as well as the PING CCAA Open Golf Championships hosted by Thompson Rivers University in Kamloops, British Columbia October 12-16.
Paul Murnaghan, program coordinator for Golf programs at Holland College, said varsity golf is thriving at the college.
"We're very excited about the fall schedule. Holland College remains committed to promoting and growing competitive golf in Atlantic Canada, and our varsity golf teams are a big part of the commitment," he noted.
To compete in the ACAA and CCAA Championships, interested Holland College students first go through a series of qualifying events before Jeff Donovan, varsity golf coach and an instructor in Holland College's golf programs, decides on the final teams.
"We're really excited about the teams this fall. It looks like we're going to have a great mix of experience and fresh faces. It's going to be very interesting to see how it shakes down through the qualifying events," said Donovan.
The qualifier will include rounds at Fox Meadow, Avondale, Stanhope, and the Harvest Moon Tournament hosted by the Brudenell River Golf Course. The team will then practice extensively at the Canadian Golf Academy in Stratford in preparation for their regional play leading up to the ACAA Championships.
Potential members of the men's team include returning players Jeremy Stevenson, Cody MacKay and Joey Neale, all from Charlottetown; and Alex Egan from Nova Scotia. All four players have competed successfully for the Hurricanes in the past. The women's team includes Dawn Kneebone from last year's team, along with a handful of talented newcomers looking to join the line-up, including Ashley Vankrooneburg, Brandi Ward and Kaitlyn Perry-Dawson, all from Nova Scotia.
Holland College offers two golf programs, the two-year Golf Club Management program, and the one-year post graduate Professional Golf Management. The college's Golf programs and the Holland College Foundation will host the 2nd Annual Holland College Golf Alumni tournament on Monday, October 4th, at Fox Meadow. The tournament is a two-person scramble with a shotgun start.
