ABI/INFORM (PROQUEST)

ABI/INFORM, a PROQUEST database, is a premier source of worldwide business and management information. With coverage beginning in 1971, ABI/INFORM indexes over 1700 publications, including well-known titles such as Fortune and Business Week, but also lesser known, specialized publications. ABI/INFORM also provides information on over 60,000 corporations (business and executive profiles).

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. Full text coverage is provided for over 1000 of the indexed publications, although some titles observe a short "embargo" period for full text access. The database is updated daily.

Academic Search Elite (EBSCOHOST)

Academic Search Elite, an EBSCOHOST database, offers users the opportunity to search a broad (3400+ titles) base of scholarly periodical content on a wide variety of topics, including science, engineering, technology, medicine, social sciences, and humanities. Content is somewhat more scholarly than for some of our other databases.

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. Full text coverage is provided for over 2000 of the indexed publications, although some titles observe a short "embargo" period for full text access. Coverage for most titles begins in the mid-1990's. The database is updated daily.

AccessScience

AccessScience is the online equivalent of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, 9th Edition, and the McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th Edition, supplemented by research updates and news stories. Users can browse through categories of subject content or search the 8000+ articles for desired content. The database also features more than 13,000 high quality illustrations and a selection of study guides. AccessScience is updated daily.

Agricola

Agricola, prepared by the National Agriculture Library (NAL) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is an index to the international periodical literature of agriculture and allied disciplines, including animal, plant, and veterinary sciences, entomology, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, food and human nutrition, and earth and environmental sciences. Users may search either the NAL catalogue or the index to journal literature (the "Article Citation Database").

Although Agricola records contain bibliographic data only (i.e., no full text articles), the database producer increasingly includes links out to full text versions (where these exist) of the materials indexed.

Agricola coverage begins in 1979, and the database is updated on a monthly basis. Use of the database is unrestricted.

BioMed Central

BioMed Central features over 160 open access (freely available), peer-reviewed journals publishing biomedical research in areas such as microbiology, neuroscience and various medical specialties.

Canadian Business and Current Affairs (PROQUEST)

Canadian Business and Current Affairs (CBCA), a PROQUEST product, is the umbrella title for a series of three databases that, taken together, index over 1500 popular and scholarly Canadian publications.

CBCA Reference covers general interest (e.g., Maclean's) and scholarly titles, while CBCA Business includes business, trade and industry publications. CBCA Current Events specializes in news sources (newspapers and wire services). The default settings for CBCA searches include all three CBCA subsets, but users can make their own selection, if they prefer, by clicking on the Databases selected link on the search screen.

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. Full text coverage is provided for approximately half of the indexed publications, although some titles observe a short "embargo" period for full text access. Indexing for most titles begins in the mid-1980's, while full text coverage generally dates from the mid-1990's. The database is updated continuously.

CPI.Q (Canadian Periodicals)

CPI-Q: index to over 400 Canadian periodicals and newspapers; some coverage of education, counseling and communications.  Of the over 400 titles indexed, over 250 are available as full text, and coverage generally dates from the mid 1990s.  For information on off-campus use, please click here. Directory of Open Access Journals

The Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) provides links to "full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals". Of the over 1700 journals referenced on the site, indexing is provided for over 400; for the remainder, links are included to the journal website, where search engines for that title only usually exist.

Coverage is generally for the last five years, with a few titles extending back as far as 1995.

Education Resources Information Center (ERIC)

ERIC is an index to the worldwide literature of education. Coverage includes periodicals as well as books, pamphlets, ERIC Digests (2-3 page summaries of important topics), curriculum guides, bibliographies, and unpublished works such as conference papers or government reports. ERIC records date from 1966 to the present. The ERIC interface available to Holland College users originates with the database producer Ebscohost.

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. Full text coverage is provided for ERIC Digests (short summaries or frequently asked questions files for educational hot topics) and for all journals included in other licenced EBSCOHOST databases (direct links are provided to the full text coverage). Some titles may observe a short "embargo" period for full text access. Coverage for most titles begins in the mid-1990's. The database is updated daily.

Encyclopedia Britannica

The web version of the multidisciplinary Encyclopedia Britannica includes an expanded edition of the world-famous reference work as well as the Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th ed., the Britannica Book of the Year, a magazine collection, and links to other recommended web sites. Users can browse topics from A-Z or can conduct keyword searches across all or part of the site. Also featured are a Biography of the Day and a Today in History link. There are numerous illustrations in all portions of the database.

The database is updated continuously, with at least three major revisions a year.

Health & Wellness Resource Center (GALE INFOTRAC)

The Health & Wellness Resource Center, produced by Gale InfoTrac, provides access to over 700 consumer health/medical journals as well as several well-known reference works (the Gale Encyclopedia of Childhood and Adolescence, the Gale Encyclopedia of Genetic Disorders, Body by Design, Mosby's Medical, Nursing, and Allied Health Dictionary, 5th ed., and others). Also included are links to recommended web sites, pamphlets, guides to prescription and over-the-counter drugs, and complementary (non-traditional or natural) health resources.
This database emphasizes quality control through careful selection of materials and inclusion of a high percentage of peer-reviewed titles.  A companion database, Health Reference Center Academic, is also licensed by Holland College and it emphasizes more scholarly content.

All Health & Wellness Resource Center records include a bibliographical citation (author, title, journal name, etc.) and approximately 75% of the indexed items are also available in full text format.

Since Health & Wellness Resource Center is a restricted (by subscription only) database, off-campus users must hold a valid library barcode to gain access. In addition, users should note that access to the Health & Wellness Resource Center is limited to four concurrent sessions at a time; users who encounter a "turnaway message" when this limit has been reached should try again a few minutes later.

Health Reference Center Academic (GALE INFOTRAC)

The Health Reference Center Academic database, produced by Gale InfoTrac, provides an integrated collection of over 1000 general interest health and fitness magazines, medical and professional periodicals, reference books and pamphlets.  Designed for nursing and allied health students, as well as consumer health researchers, it serves as a slightly more scholarly companion piece to Health and Wellness Resource Center (known for its emphasis on consumer health information).  This database emphasizes quality control through careful selection of materials and inclusion of a high percentage of peer-reviewed titles.

All Health Reference Center Academic records include a bibliographical citation (author, title, journal name, etc.) and approximately 75% of the indexed items are also available in full text format.

Since Health Reference Center Academic is a restricted (by subscription only) database, off-campus users must hold a valid library barcode to gain access. In addition, users should note that access to the Health Reference Center  Academic is limited to four concurrent sessions at a time; users who encounter a "turnaway message" when this limit has been reached should try again a few minutes later.

Hospitality & Tourism Complete, an EBSCOHOST database, offers users the opportunity to search periodical titles on topics such as hospitality law, leisure, culinary arts, and tourism destinations markets.

MedlinePLUS

MedlinePLUS, hosted by the U.S. National Library of Medicine, seeks to provide consumers with authoritative, up-to-date health information. Users can browse through over 700 topic areas (reviewed and updated every six months), and links are provided to over 1250 expert organizations. MedlinePLUS also offers a medical dictionary and encyclopedia, drug information, tutorials, information about diagnostic tests, and daily news updates. National (U.S.) Criminal Justice Reference System

The NCJRS Abstracts Databases contains summaries of more than 180,000 publications, including U.S. government documents, books, research reports, journal articles, and unpublished research. A second, full text database features the complete version of more than 7000 downloadable criminal justice publications. Searchers can enter search terms directly or can browse through expandable topic lists. Updates to the Abstracts database are weekly; the publications section is refreshed whenever a new title is added.

Professional Development Collection (EBSCOHOST)

The Professional Development Collection, an EBSCOHOST database, provides indexing/partial full text access to over 700 journals and reports in all areas of education (K-12, higher education, special needs, etc.), child development, and counselling.

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. Full text coverage is provided for over 550 of the 700 indexed publications, although some titles observe a short "embargo" period for full text access. While indexing in some cases extends back as far as 1965, coverage for most titles begins in the mid-1990's. The database is updated daily.

PubMed

PubMed is compiled by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. It is a bibliographic (citation only) database that indexes the literature of medicine, nursing, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and the health care system. It covers more than 4800 journals published in the United States and 70 other countries; most records are from English-language sources.

All PubMed records include a bibliographical citation (author, title, journal name, etc.) and frequently, an abstract or short description. Where online content exists for the records indexed, whether by subscription only or open source (free), PubMed also provides a link out to that content.

Users who wish to take full advantage of PubMed's features may wish to try the excellent online tutorial provided by the National Library of Medicine. The best recommended use of PubMed is as as a comprehensive scanning tool or broad literature search is required; those who wish to read full-text on line or who would rather consult consumer health sources (i.e., less clinical, easier to understand), may prefer the companion site, MedlinePLUS.

ScienceDirect Health & Life Sciences Collection (Elsevier)

ScienceDirect Health & Life Sciences Collection is compiled by the major science publisher Elsevier. While the larger ScienceDirect parent database and the related SCIRUS website index thousands of Elsevier books and journals, the collection licensed by Holland College, known as Health & Life Sciences (college edition), includes the index to all Elsevier titles plus the full text of over 900 journals in the health and life sciences sub-set. The subject range is quite far-reaching, including titles such as Biotechnology Advances, Environmental Pollution, the Journal of Adolescence, Dental Materials, Tissue and Cell, Trends in Food Science and Technology, and the Journal for Nature Conservation, to name but a few.

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. While indexing in some cases extends back as far as 1965, full-text coverage for the titles included in the Health and Life Sciences Collection begins five years ago. The database is updated daily.

SCIRUS

SCIRUS is not a database in the traditional sense, but rather a science-specific, web-based search engine. You can use SCIRUS to locate freely-available, scholarly scientific, technical, and medical information on the web as well as journal content (some of it free, some of it by subscription). When you search, your results will be sorted into two categories: web results and journal results, and these can be sorted by relevancy or date (most recent first).

Although some full text SCIRUS content is freely available, many articles can only be accessed through subscription services. Users who wish to pursue by-subscription content found in SCIRUS should contact library services to see if articles, reports, etc., can be obtained through other database services or via interlibrary loan.

Access to the search engine portion of SCIRUS and to many of the websites and journals indexed by it is unrestricted.

SocINDEX with Full Text

SocINDEX with Full Text, an EBSCOHOST database, allows you to search and retrieve bibliographic and full text information from in the field of sociology.  Sub-disciplines include criminology & criminal justice, demography, ethnic & racial studies, gender studies, marriage & family, political sociology, religion, rural & urban sociology, social development, social psychology, social work, substance abuse & other addictions, violence and many others.  

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. SocINDEX with Full Text contains full text for 397 "core" coverage journals dating back to 1908, and 150 "priority" coverage journals. This database also includes full text for more than 720 books, and full text for 6,743 conference papers.

The Vocational & Career Collection, and EBSCOHOST database, provides indexing/partial full text access to over 650 trade and industry journals. Subject coverage is broad, and includes topics such as corrections, nursing, construction, graphic arts, foodservice, and retail.

Each record in the database includes a bibliographic citation (author, title, name of publications, etc.) and a short abstract or summary of document content. Full text coverage is provided for approximately 80% of the publications, although some titles observe a short "embargo" period for full text access. Coverage for most titles begins in the mid-1990's. The database is updated weekly.

World Cultures Today

World Cultures Today features content from 38 different books in the Greenwood Press Culture and Customs Around the World series, as well as newly commissioned articles, maps, illustrations, and recommended weblinks.
