All About Circulation (Borrowing/Access) Services

Borrowing Materials From Holland College Library Collections

To borrow materials from Holland College Library collections, you will need a valid student or staff identification card. On the back of the card you will see a 14-digit library services barcode. To activate your barcode the first time, please visit your nearest resource centre or send us an e-mail message with your name, program, and barcode number. Your barcode number is also the key to making online requests, self-renewals, gaining access to protected resources such as databases from off-campus, and interlibrary loans. Please bring your card with you each time you wish to borrow materials.

What can you borrow? Most of the items listed in our online catalogue. You may request lendable items from all campuses and they will be shipped to your preferred location. You may also return items to any resource centre location.

If you are not a Holland College student or staff member, please consult
our page on services to external clients and alumni. Distant learners should click here to read about off-campus loans.

Requesting Materials From Holland College Library Collections

You may make an in-person request for library materials from any campus at any of our resource centre locations.
If you prefer, you may also make an online request.

To make an online request, visit our online catalogue and conduct a search for the material you desire. Once you have identified an item of interest, simply click on the Request Item icon that appears next to each title on the list of titles or the full bibliographic record for an individual title. The list screen looks like this:

You will then be prompted to enter your 14-digit barcode number (enter without spaces), your desired location for item pick-up, and any other note or instruction you may wish to add.

When the material is available for pick-up, you will receive notification from the library by e-mail, telephone, or in person. Requests are usually held for three working days. If you no longer require the material, please advise your nearest resource centre or cancel the request online in the My Account feature. To do so, visit the library catalogue, click on the My Account tab, enter your barcode, click on Holds, select items for cancellation, click on Cancel.

Renewing Materials

The loan period for most items in our collection is one week, although some high demand titles may have been assigned shorter loan periods. If you need to keep materials for longer than the loan period, it is very important that you renew those items.

You may renew your loans in-person at any of our resource centre locations. If you prefer, you may also make a renewal request online.

To make a online renewal request, visit our online catalogue and click on the My Account tab or Login link. You will then be prompted to enter your 14-digit barcode number (enter without spaces). Once logged in to your account, click on either the Checked Out tab or Items Out link. A list of your loans should appear. Click the box beside each title that you wish to renew, and then click on the Renew button at the top/bottom of the list.

Please note: we regret we cannot renew any items for which there are pending requests or in cases where the maximum number of allowable renewals (5) has been exceeded.

Off-Campus Access to Protected Resources

Some of the online materials in Holland College collections are protected, i.e., licenced for use only by Holland College staff and students. When you click on links to these resources from on-campus, you will passed through to them automatically. From any off-campus location, however, you will be required to identify yourself as a member of the Holland College community.

When you attempt to access any protected resource from off-campus, you will be prompted to enter the 14-digit barcode number from the back of your staff/student card:

off campus authentication

Enter the number without any spaces and you should be passed through directly to the resource.

If you encounter any difficulties, please contact staff at your nearest resource or e-mail us at
library@hollandc.pe.ca.

Policy on Overdue, Lost, or Damaged Materials

Although Holland College Library Services does not impose fines for late (overdue) materials, we do charge at full retail value for the replacement of materials that are lost or damaged. If you receive an overdue notice (usually sent via e-mail to your college account) for materials which you believe to be returned, please contact your nearest resource centre. Students who are assigned to on-the-job (OJT) work placements are reminded that this policy applies to them, too! Please consult the note on Renewals to help you manage your account.

All students are reminded that library accounts must be cleared before graduation. In order to receive your final certificate of achievement, please ensure that outstanding loans or other problems are resolved before graduation day.
