I live in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, which is quickly becoming Napa North as our orchards are replaced by vineyards. And yes, you can grow grapes this far north.

The Thumbnail CV is this: after college I had a newspaper career. I’ve been a reporter, sales manager, general manager, managing editor and publisher. I eventually chucked the office routine to return to my first love: writing. For three years I wrote a syndicated humour column. For 20 years I’ve been a freelance writer focused on business, travel and the business of travel.

I primarily write travel articles for magazines from Singapore to Sweden from my base near the Bay of Fundy in Nova Scotia, Canada.

In pursuit of story ideas, I’ve traveled on the old Orient Express (before it became a luxury train); bobbed around icebergs off Newfoundland in a very, very small open boat; hung upside down from treetops in an Alberta dude ranch (okay, that was a mistake); and nearly killed myself snowbiking down an 8,500-foot-high mountain in the Canadian Rockies (expletive deleted).

I’ve twice cycled the length of Prince Edward Island, been thrown by a horse named Parker in Bermuda, found a rhinoceros outside my door in South Africa, and drank with a man dressed as a cow at St. John’s George Street Festival. This all becomes fodder for articles.

As a die-hard capitalist and entrepreneur (I’ve written two business books, as well as being a newspaper publisher and involved in several small businesses) it grieves me when I see lost opportunity. That happens a lot in the travel business. So, to help, I have launched DestinationDoctor.ca.

My work has appeared in Meetings & Incentive Travel, Association News, MPI’s The Meeting Professional as well as MPI’s One +, ignite, Meetings & Conventions, Incentives & Meetings International, International Meeting Review, Executive Traveler, Motivational Strategies, Corporate Travel, Meetings Incentives International, Profit, Progress, Cruise & Travel Lifestyles, Spa, The Robb Report, Canadian Geographic, Good Times, Harrowsmith, Equinox, Organic Spa, Reader’s Digest, Imperial Oil Review, DreamScapes, Westworld, LeisureWays (CAA magazines), Saltscapes, and others.

I’ve also written four books:

  • Sweat Equity: Atlantic Canada’s New Entrepreneurs
  • Discover Nova Scotia’s Museums & Art Galleries
  • All In The Family, Inc., Insights from the Corporate Boardrooms and Kitchen Tables of Canadian Family Businesses
  • The Nova Scotia Book of Musts, The 101 Places Every Nova Scotian MUST See

I have been a director and officer of several publishing companies as well as a small holding company, and served for nine years on the board of the Atlantic Community Newspapers’ Association. I have served as regional director of the Periodical Writer’s Association of Canada and on the board of TERLA (The Electronic Rights Licensing Agency). I also spent 12 years on the board of The Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia and served a year as chair.

I have been a consultant to an American magazine, a chain of New Brunswick newspapers, and several Atlantic publications.

My volunteer work has included working with The Canadian Red Cross to aid stranded travelers during 9/11, as a fundraiser for a sheltered workshop and as a board member of an award-winning touring theatre company.

I have been a guest lecturer in journalism at the University of Kings College, Halifax (NS), and Western Community College, Stephenville (NL); spoken to students about entrepreneurship, and to trade and industry groups about entrepreneurship, travel, marketing and managing media.
