Holland College Welshmen Band and PEI Pops team up to create Hollywood magic!
Apr 17, 2018 7:30 PM
Hollywood magic will be created when The PEI Pops teams up with the
Welshmen Community Band in presenting Hooray for Hollywood!, a tribute to
music from the silver screen. The concert features the finest in cinema soundtracks,
including iconic themes from Casablanca, The Wizard of Oz, Singin’ in the Rain,
Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and The Magnificent Seven.
The Holland College Welshmen Community Band, under the
leadership of Christine Blanchard, is made up of about 30 musicians, and
performs from a variety of musical genres. Within this group is a smaller but
dedicated jazz ensemble which gives members a chance to showcase their skills in
the art of improvisation.
The PEI Pops, under the direction of Leo Marchildon, has enjoyed a
virtual explosion of popularity since rebranding themselves last year from their
origins as the Strathgartney Chamber Orchestra. Although classically trained, Leo
spent much of his life working in stage and screen, thus the move from classical
repertoire to more popular styles of music was an easy transition.
Both ensembles strive to provide unique performing opportunities for
musicians from all walks of life, ranging from university and college students to
seasoned professionals and dedicated community members. This concert is sure to
thrill not only those who attend, but also the 50 musicians on stage, for whom the
chance to perform this type of music in a large symphonic setting is a rare treat.
The concert takes place Tuesday April 17 at 7:30 pm in the Florence
Simmons Performance Hall, located at 140 Weymouth Street on the Holland College Prince of Wales Campus, Charlottetown. Admission is by free-will offering.
