Holland College’s SoPA Show Choir looking forward to opening for visiting vocal group
November 2, 2017
Charlottetown, PE – Students in Holland College’s School of Performing Arts Show Choir are working hard on a piece that they will perform when they open for Canada’s premiere vocal group, Cadence, at the Florence Simmons Performance Hall on November 29 at 7:30 p.m.
The SoPA Choir, which includes almost 25 students from the Theatre Performance, Dance Performance, and Music Performance programs, will perform White Winter Hymnal by the Pentatonix, an a cappella piece that features voice and body percussion only. Choir director Jenn Cullen said the group is looking forward to meeting Cadence and opening their show for them.
“It’s been really cool practising this piece,” said Jenn Cullen, music director for the choir. “There’s a huge element of entertainment in this style of music, and it’s becoming very popular.”
Cadence has been wowing audiences across the country and around the world for nearly 20 years. Whether performing at sold-out jazz clubs and concert halls, at music festivals, for educational outreach, or for corporate functions, the four performers bring an infectious energy and uncanny verve to every song they sing.
The group’s four critically acclaimed studio albums, Cool Yule (2011), Speak Easy (2010), Twenty for One (2005), and Frost Free (2000) have won or been nominated for numerous awards, including three nods from the JUNO Awards and 10 from CARA, the Contemporary A Cappella Recording Awards.
In addition to the SoPA Show Choir opening the show, SoPA students will participate in a workshop with the group in the afternoon and appear on stage with them that evening.
Tickets are available on ticketpro.ca and at the box office of the Florence Simmons Performance Hall, located at 140 Weymouth Street, Charlottetown. The School of Performing Arts is a partnership between Holland College and Confederation Centre of the Arts.
