Former Hurricane invited to CFL Eastern Combine

March 18, 2014

Ferguson and Coach MarkCharlottetown, PE – Former Holland College Hurricanes great, Demetrius Ferguson, is attending the Canadian Football League’s Eastern Combine being held in Montreal this week. Ferguson, a two-time Hurricanes MVP, is the third Hurricane in as many years to attend the invitation-only CFL evaluation camp where players’ skills are measured and evaluated by scouts and coaches from all the league’s teams.

After graduating from Holland College’s Marketing and Advertising Management program in 2012, Ferguson, 24, accepted an offer to play football at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, NS. His success on the field and in the classroom has continued there. He was selected as X-Men MVP this year and plans to graduate next year with his business degree.

Ferguson will be forever remembered by Hurricanes fans for returning the opening kickoff in the very first game of the Hurricanes inaugural season. Hurricanes team president Mike O’Grady said Ferguson’s success is a reflection of his strength of character.

“Demetrius is a fine young man and the best football player we have had in our program. He has that combination of determination and talent that enables him to seize opportunities and turn them into something big. I expect he will show very well at the CFL Combine,” he said.

“At Holland College I was given the chance to play the sport I love. I’ve been very fortunate to have so many great opportunities presented to me. My plan is never to let my teammates or my school down,” said Ferguson.

In the last two years, former Hurricanes Marcus Dunphy and Dave Clark also were invited to CFL combines, and Dunphy actually attended a mini-camp tryout with the Toronto Argonauts. A number of Hurricanes have gone on to play university football after graduating from programs at Holland College.

“For many of our players, Holland College has become a launching pad. Articulation agreements with universities across the country enable them to receive credit for their Holland College training and enter university programs at an advanced level,” O’Grady said.
