WVBALL | Hurricanes split matches with Mystics and Mounties

On Saturday, the ‘Canes dropped the first two sets 25-15 and 25-19 before bouncing back to take the next two sets 25-21 and 25-23. The ‘Canes could not complete the comeback as they dropped the fifth set 15-10 in front of a home crowd at the Holland College Centre for Community Engagement.
Alice Marques recorded 18 kills in the match while Brittany States added ten and Megan LeBlanc had eight in the loss.
Gracie Ferguson had 32 assists while Dana Trainor had a team high 28 digs for the ‘Canes.
Ferguson added three kills, two aces and nine digs while Marques also had 11 digs and two blocks.
On Sunday, The ‘Canes would drop the first set 25-23 before reeling off set victories of 25-11, 25-19 and 25-10 to take the match.
Marques had a spectacular performance as she recorded a Hurricanes women’s volleyball record of 25 kills in the match, the most ever recorded in a single game by a Hurricanes women’s volleyball player. Marques also had one assist, one ace, four digs, two blocks, 27.5 points and a hitting percentage of 0.524.
States had a second straight match with ten kills while adding one ace, three blocks and a 0.529 hitting percentage.
LeBlanc had seven kills, two aces and ten digs while Meg MacKinnon had six kills for the ‘Canes in the win.
Ferguson had a match high 46 assists to go along with two aces, 11 digs and two blocks while Trainor had 19 digs, one kill and three assists in the victory.
The Hurricanes now sit at 12-2 and remain in first place in the ACAA with 24 points. The Mystics are in second with a record of 11-1 and 22 points but have played two fewer games than the ‘Canes. The Mounties now sit at 9-5 and 18 points which is good for third in the conference.
The Hurricanes return to the court this weekend when they travel to Fredericton on Saturday to take on the STU Tommies (5-8) at 6pm. Their next home game is on Wednesday, February 1 versus the Mount Allison Mounties at 7pm at the Centre for Community Engagement.
